A MadMike Movie Review: Super 8
Super 8 is a Super Movie
Remember the good old days when you spent Saturday afternoon watching a great flick? Well this terrific movie reminds me of just those days. I just saw Super 8 in iMax and loved it!
Writer/director J.J. Abrams teams with uber-producer Steven Spielberg for this period sci-fi thriller set in the late ’70s, and centering on a mysterious train crash in a small Ohio town. Summer, 1979: a group of young friends are filming a Super-8 movie when a pickup truck derails a speeding train. When the locals start to disappear and even the inquisitive deputy can’t come up with answers, suspicions emerge that the incident was anything but an accident. As the truth finally begins emerge, no one is prepared to learn what now stalks the unsuspecting citizens of this once quiet community. Starring Friday Night Lights‘ Kyle Chandler and Elle Fanning.
This movie is just plain fun for the entire family might be a tad intense for children under seven. As a matter of fact, it could have been an adaptation of a Steven King novel, complete with preteen heroes, a neat monster from outer space, and a mean old military guy.
It is not only exciting and funny the special effects are mind blowing, which no doubt was helped by the iMax format. I highly recommend Super 8 to all looking to return to the days of ET and the Goonies. It’s just a fun movie without any sappy love stories (although there is a little bit of chemistry between two of the kids) or confusing political twists. I happily award this movie 5 STARS.

Perfectly described–what a wonderful movie! I was so overwhelmed with actually liking the plot that I had forgotten to praise the special effects, and the impeccable period set. It took me right back to ’79, or at least it would have if I had been there for it. 🙂 (In all seriousness, it was an amazing set.)
