The popular Indian yogi Baba Ramdev is watched by millions on his daily TV show. On his show last week he announced he would “fast unto death” in a bid to prompt the government to enact hard-hitting anti-corruption measures.

Baba Ramdev wants the government to recover “black money” – suspected bribes held in foreign bank accounts.

The peace-loving yogi called for the death penalty for corrupt government officials.

“There is a powerful anger in the people of this country. They want urgent action,” he said.

If “black money” paid in bribes were recovered, he told supporters in Delhi as he began his fast, “no one will be hungry, uneducated, unemployed”.

India’s government has been rocked by a series of corruption scandals. But despite the intervention of four federal ministers on Friday, Baba Ramdev could not be convinced to call off his indefinite fast.

Meanwhile, Bollywood star Manoj Tiwari said Baba Ramdev’s move has enlightened him and prompted him to do something for the country.

“We used to do a lot of mistakes, towards which we never paid heed to. But people like you (Baba Ramdev) have awakened us and made us realize that there is nothing more important than country, now, I am feeling that if we dedicate some time for the country, it would be a great contribution on our part,” the actor said.

You know, as noble as this may seem, even Gandhi failed to even keep India together.
