King Henry VIII-Jonathan Rhys Meyers-banned for life from United Airlines

Handsome star of The Tudors, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, troubled by alcohol addiction

Jonathan Rhys Meyers, the star of the Showtime/BBC smash hit The Tudors, tried to execute himself in his London home on Tuesday night. Rhys Meyers, who played Henry in the BBC series, has been suffering from alcohol abuse for several years, and even managed to get himself banned for life from United Airlines as a result of a 2010 incident where he drank too much and starting calling people the “n” word.

Rhys Meyers, also a star in the movie, Bend it Like Beckham, has been battling booze for some time reports The Sun:

Earlier this month he checked into a five-star rehabilitation center in South Africa – his fifth stint in rehab. Irish-born Meyers has starred in movies including Alexander and Bend It Like Beckham and is a former Hugo Boss model.

He has spoken before about his booze hell. And he admitted: “When I do drink I’m like Bambi. I’m all over the place like a 16-year-old kid.”

I watched every episode of The Tudors, more than once, and even bought the entire series so I could watch them again.  Rhys Meyers did an extraordinary job as King Henry VIII, although if looking at it historically, he looked nothing at all like Henry VIII, who was morbidly obese and crippled by gout and an old leg injury.  Regardless, by all appearances Rhys Meyers had a bright future in film.  Unfortunately, booze beat him to the Oscars, as he appeared to prize it over all things, despite his wealth and fame.  It is mindful, in some respects, of Elvis Presley’s Fame and Fortune.

LONDON, June 30 (UPI) — Irish-born actor Jonathan Rhys Meyers was hospitalized this week after a suspected suicide attempt, Britain’s The Sun newspaper reported Thursday.

Meyers has appeared in the films “Forget Paris,” “August Rush,” “Alexander,” “Bend it Like Beckham” and “Velvet Goldmine.” He is also the star of the TV series “The Tudors.”

Despite his bright career, the 33-year-old Golden Globe winner has long battled an addiction to alcohol and has spent several stints in rehab.

Sources told the newspaper someone at his house called paramedics after he allegedly ingested pills.

Police also were summoned and he was taken to a hospital near his home in London Tuesday night after he refused treatment at the scene for more than 30 minutes, the report said.

“This is very sad. It was the opinion of those present that he tried to take his life,” an insider told The Sun.

He was released from the hospital Wednesday, the report said, and declined to comment when asked by the newspaper.

This story, like so many before it, proves that money does not, in fact, buy happiness.  What do you think of the tragic story that follows Jonathan Rhys Meyers.

I adore Johnathon. His performance in The Tudors was stunning and he captured the essence of what I believe Henry VIII truly was like. I think in the days of boring, run of the mill “character” actors and actresses like Jennifer Aniston, Bruce Willis and even Angelina Jolie (minus Girl Interrupted possibly) to watch an actor like JRM is to behold the true genius of the craft. He embodies what a great actor should be. To the poster commenting on alcohol being legal, please understand that the government interference in substance abuse has been proven by prohibition and the war on drugs to be a huge failure. I marvel at those who believe the government should have the ability to decide what the masses can ingest in their bodies. You seem to believe they can make that decision better than you or I can. Absurd. As for JRM, I pray he can beat his addiction.

This man is very talented and very much eye candy to say the least. It is hard to hear of such great people being brought down by such substabces that are still very much legal. Sad Sad story , I hope for the best for him and his future!

He’s such a talented actor–I hope he overcomes this, though I’m sure it won’t be an easy road.
