Hey, Breivik, where did you buy the ammo in your hand?

Cheap ammo for sale … in the United States

Breivik “bought American” ammo

In his now infamous manifesto Breivik wrote he could have bought the larger clips from Sweden, but the ammo would have cost him a lot more than the $550 he spent to purchase the 10 clips from a U.S. supplier—under two bucks a bullet.

“10 x 30 round magazines – .223 cal at 34 USD per mag. Had to buy through a smaller US supplier (who again ordered from other suppliers) as most suppliers have export limitations… Total cost: 550 USD.
Example of bananna clip used by Breivik in the Norwegian massacre

Banana Clip

In a section entitled, “How much ammo does a soldier bring to a battle?” Breivik cited a need for high-capacity “banana clips.” He should bring a total of two ammo pouches with room for 6 banana clips and one in his rifle so a total of 7 banana clips. In addition he should bring 4 clips for his pistol. Some carry more; 8 mags for the assault rifle and 4 pistol mags.

I…sent an application for a Ruger Mini 14 semi-automatic rifle (5.56). It is the most ‘army like’ rifle allowed in Norway, although it is considered a ‘poor man’s’ AR-15. I envy our European American brothers as the gun laws in Europe sucks [expletive] in comparison.”

The sale or transfer of high-capacity magazines made after 1994 was banned under a federal assault weapons ban that went into effect that year but expired in 2004. Representative Carolyn McCarthy (D-N.Y.) introduced H.R. 308, the “Large Capacity Ammo Feeding Device Act.”

The gunman killed her husband and severely wounded her son in the 1993 rampage aboard a Long Island Railway. The gunman carried a large amount of ammo7mdash;four, 15-round clips. She reintroduced the bill limiting sales of high-powered ammo one year after the mass shooting in Tucson, Arizona, which killed six and injured 13, including Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.

McCarthy stated, We’re sending a death warrant to other parts of the world. Unfortunately now, internationally, it’s known that you can get here, buy your guys, buy your large magazines, and you’re not going to have any problem. She also told the press that she blamed the the easy availability of high-capacity ammo magazines in the U.S. for helping Breivik enable a large-scale massacre.

She noted that Breivik’s manifesto became public a month after American al-Qaida spokesman, Adam Gadahn, issued an online video calling upon terrorists to take advantage of weaknesses in U.S. gun laws.

Nevertheless, gun and ammo aficionados still cling to their Second Amendment “rights” without regard to harm to others.

A site entitled “Cheaper than dirt,” advertises guns and ammo, urges readers to “Buy American” ammo. magazines have been brought in over the years to the tune of millions, undoubtedly. The basic AK-47 mag is the steel, 30 round “banana clip.” While these have gone up in price over the years, used surplus and unissued condition magazines are still available for under $20. The great thing about AK mags is the demand is so high they are being made new right here in the US!

The NRA disparaged H.R. 308 as yet another attack on Second Amendment rights. Firearms designed to use magazines that hold more than 10 rounds are among the most commonly owned self-defense firearms today… There would be no way to tell new magazines from old ones, which are used for law enforcement, self-defense and target shooting, but has no comment on the Norwegian massacre as yet.

The NRA made many comments on H.R. 308:

Obviously, despite the burdens it would put on honest Americans, Rep. McCarthy’s bill wouldn’t stop a criminal from obtaining magazines that hold more than 10 rounds. Tens of millions of Americans own countless tens of millions of magazines that hold more than 10 rounds; even Rep. McCarthy admits that confiscation of existing magazines would be impossible. Anything that common can be stolen or bought on the black market. And even if no magazines capable of holding more than 10 rounds were available, a criminal could still use multiple smaller magazines, multiple firearms, more powerful handguns, or weapons other than firearms.

One online commentator wrote that the U.S. hard right would find a way to justify the necessity of the Second Amendment.

A quick, though hardly exhaustive, search of the web sites of major US hard rightwing blowhards (Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter) shows nothing so far on the massacre. Radio silence. But what happened in Oslo will in no way undermine the Tea Party world-view. Here’s a likely response:

  • Norway has no strict gun control laws but Breivik still obtained guns: gun control laws do not work
  • If the summer campers were armed, the massacre would have never happened. The U.S. should enact laws obliging citizens to own firearms and ammo at all times.
  • Muslim immigration in Europe pushed Breivik over the edge.
  • Breivik snapped because he lived in socialist Norway, an elaborate liberty-killing welfare state. Socialism can cause massacres and not only causes people to kill others, but themselves as well. Keep socialists out of power, get purge welfare states and normally upstanding, conservatives will not go crazy.
  • Breivik’s massacre of young socialist campers decapitated Norway’s future socialist elite.

What are your thoughts on the Second Amendment? If guns are outlawed, will only outlaws have guns?

I think that this article is written by someone who is too ignorant to understand that guns don’t kill people, but people kill people. 😉

Why shouldn’t we ban cars? Look how many people get killed by incompetent drivers! Moreover people get killed by cars deliberately. Everyday!

Dorothy, once again a well written post. Very insightful. Too bad that legislators in this country are deaf, dumb, and blind and I don’t mean in a physical sense. Theirs is more on the greedy, power hungry stupid side. They put their desires to stay in office and their greed for money ahead of the safety of people in this country and others. Brad makes some very good points in his comments but by and large most people in this country should not be allowed to have guns. If they must have guns for protection or for hunting let them have double barrel shotguns and not be allowed to carry them around. It is not that I am anti gun. As a non active Marine and a former police officer an a guy who was born and raised in the South I have been around guns all of my life. I am, however, anti just anybody who wants to have a gun having a gun. Guns don’t necessarily kill people. People don’t necessarily kill people. People with guns quite often kill people.

Myself, I had a cap and ball .45 for home defense. When my younger, wanna-be-gangsta aquaintences guffawed at my choice and suggested a Glock or a Tec-9, I said WTF for? This thing roars like a cannon, smokes like chimmney, and will expolde plaster chips off the wall next to a burglars head. I don’t want to kill anybody, I just want the guy to run away, and if he doesn’t, I have five more balls to expolde more than plaster chips. But I think after the first shot, he’ll shit himself, and do what I want, GTF outta my house.

P.S. lazer, I agree. Most people in this country do not need, and should not have guns.

Hey what about this? Re-introduce some old technology, like the revolver rifle. Possibly single-action. With no groove in the shell, like on pistol revolver shells, the revolver round wouldn’t work in an automatic or semi-automatic. You’d have the same caliber shell, and the muti-shot repeater capability to hit a deer or elk agian if the first shot missed, but not the firepower to spray a shopping mall. And the two differnt types of ammo could be produced and sold in apropriate quantities, and at different prices. Also, do you remember the old over-and-under .22/410ga. and .22/20ga. rifle/shotguns? If more hunters were actual hunters and not weekend sportsmen, these guns would be more than adequate for taking rabbits, squirrels, quail, etc. A good hunter could hit standing game from longer ranges with one .22 shell. Running game in close is for the .410 or 20ga., and the shells would average $.50 to a $1.25 apiece. And you wouldn’t have so much wild-game-with-side-of-lead. Now make twelve gauge shells $8.00 a piece, and it no longer makes any sense to harvest two pounds of meat with an $8.00 shell, much less several. Could we also re-engineer shotguns and shells so that, like pistols, automatics, semi-auto matics and pump-shot guns take a specific, very expensive shell, and cheaper shells that fit single shots and double barrels won’t fit them?

Bradley, I go back to when I was a police officer and people ask about getting a gun for self defense in their home. I always advised that if they thought they needed a gun to get an old rabbit eared double barreled shotgun and load it with #1 buck shot. That way little kids usually couldn’t pull the hammers back on them. Then I told them that if any were to break in on them to get in the furthermost corner of their room from where the burglar was and cock both barrels, point the gun at the door to their room and wait. If the bad guy walks through the door pull both triggers at once. That will cover enough space in that doorway that they can hardly miss him. But, even if they do, it will be loud enough, and scary enough, that he will still be running sometime next week. In fact, back in those days when I was married that was the only gun other than my service revolver that I had in my home and my wife at the time knew exactly how to use it. I got divorced before she had a chance to use it on me though.

Of course, that was long ago. These days I do not own a gun. I have a dog who hates people and a really good swing with a five iron.

Yeah, I pawned my pop-gun, moved back to the city, and got a dog that barks if a mosquito farts too loud.
I was more concerned for my safety when I lived in the country because of my socio-political-religios views. I like second hand thrift store shopping, so I don’t really have anything any self-respecting bulglar would want to steal!;-) But out in the sticks, my truck was vandalized twice, possibly because the back end is covered with bumper stickers expressing my liberal views. I have no illusions about what hard-core Reich-wingists are capable of.
The only edit I would make to your advice on burglars is ‘point the gun at the door, dial 911, and wait.’ Having been a policeman, for you, I imagine that went without saying, and if the police get to you before the burglar does, so much the better.

I think it was Chris Rock who did a bit about $1000.00 bullets. What do I think? An affordable firearm for home protection, o.k. Hunters, as long as they eat what they kill and not just hang a creepy partial animal on the wall, or stand the stuffed, naturally posed critter up on the piano, (yeah, like your family room is a coyote’s natural hibitat. brrr!) sure. In fact I know a lot of people who put food on their table in just that way. But why not make smaller caliber ammunition, which is still suitable for home defense or hunting somewhat more expensive, and larger caliber, and ‘purpose built’ ammo, such as shells for assault rifles and semi-automatic pistols wildly expensive? Also, extended round magazines, since they are only good for killing a lot of people without having to reload should simply not be available to the public, just as automatic weapons were once available, but aren’t anymore, for the best interest of the public. Why NRAniac types can’t see that that you can modify gun laws without hurting enthusiasts while simultaneously hidering the criminals is a mystery. Listen to comedians for good ideas, and congressmen for jokes, folks.

Guns are here to stay in the United States, not a chance of any sort of control, no way, no how. But, if the laws that do exist were enforced, the guy that attempted to assassinate Gabby Giffords would not have able to purchase a firearm legally. Having said that he could have probably bought one on the black market.
