‘Contempt of Parliament’ charge a possibility

Rupert Murdoch his son James and top executive Rebekah Brooks, have been formally summoned by a Parliamentary cross-panel to attend a July 19 hearing to explain to the panel of MPs, who knew what about the criminal activities that threaten to bring down the most powerful media organization in the world. Brooks has said she will attend, but James and Rupert Murdoch, in a written reply, say they cannot be there.

Committee Chairman John Whittingdale said he had asked the serjeant at arms, Jill Pay, to issue Rupert Murdoch and James Murdoch with a formal summons to appear next week. Ignoring it would lead to them being in contempt of Parliament, he said.

“We meet on Tuesday at 2.30,” Whittingdale told reporters after his committee had met in private. “Either they attend or we report their failure to attend to the House. Then we are in uncharted territory.”

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg earlier questioned whether it would be possible to “frogmarch” the Murdochs and Brooks to Parliament. “My message to Rebekah Brooks and the Murdochs is just do the decent thing,” Clegg said, answering questions after a speech in London. “You can’t hide away from this level of public anguish and anger and indeed interest. If you feel you’ve been wronged, if you feel you’ve been maligned” then “come out and set the record straight.”

Labour Party lawmaker Chris Bryant said yesterday the New York-based company should be barred from owning any media in Britain unless its non-executive directors can prove they took steps to combat practices that triggered what British Prime Minister David Cameron called a “firestorm.”
