The earthquake that rocked Washington DC

was one of 90 earthquakes in USA yesterday

Lost in the fuss about the 5.8 earthquake in Virginia on Tuesday was the fact that there were about 90 other earthquakes across the United States that same day, including a 5.3 quake in Colorado. Only a few of those were detectable by people, and only 12 were above a 3.0 magnitude.

According to a U.S. Geological Survey geophysicist, it was a typical seismologic day – in terms of sheer numbers of tremors – in the United States; what was slightly out of the ordinary was the magnitude and location of the earthquakes, said Rafael Abreu.

Virginia’s earthquake was of rare strength for the area. Colorado’s quake was one of nine earthquakes in that state on Tuesday, including the 5.3 jolt about 7 miles from Cokedale.

Upstate New York was shaken by a 2.2 quake early Tuesday near Altamont. Jones, Oklahoma, got a 2.8 jolt. And Alaska gets a few earthquakes almost every day.

Colorado has been having a rash of quakes over the past few days; on Monday, the state was hit with a 4.6 quake.

I lived in California, and the joke was, “In Los Angeles, if a 5.0 earthquake happens most people arn’t shaken up. But get a rain that leaves a sprinkle, and people think it’s Armageddon on the freeways.

Hell I lived in California all my life and been through some of the biggest. We had 2 in one day in 93, and they were pretty much like all the others, with the exception that it was the second fireplace I lost so I moved in late 92. I missed the big one in Northridge.

I spent sometime in California, (two years) and those guys get some sort of seismic activity every week. After a while I stopped being nervous.

The rule of thumb is that for a quake to be felt it needs to be about 2.5 or more. Apparently there are small un-felt ones all the time and damn near everywhere. RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!
