Atheists thanked for Ohio church billboard

An Ohio atheist group says it has been commended by some people for a billboard put up by a church.

Atheists are generally cursed by America’s faithful, often demonized even more so than gays, lesbians, and abortions.  So, it is a rare occasion when the evil God Haters are actually thanked for something, especially when it was for something they really never did at all.

Here’s the story:

The road sign in Mansfield in north-central Ohio features the statement “There is no God” in capital letters. Below that, it says, “Don’t believe everything you hear.”

Pastor Frank Moore of McElroy Road Church of Christ tells the Mansfield News Journal he wanted to honor God with an ad that would get people thinking. He says he remembered how his parents always advised him not to believe everything people told him.

The Mansfield-based Mid Ohio Atheists says it has been contacted and congratulated by people incorrectly thinking it put up the billboard. The group says it wants to thank the church for, as the atheists say, “advertising our thoughts.”

Now the Atheists are no doubt delighted for the positive attention and to show their deep appreciation for advertising their core philosophy in such a bold way they penned the following note to the church:

Members of Mid Ohio Atheists have had people contact them and congratulate them on putting up our first billboard.

While we certainly do agree with the sentiment expressed on the billboard- that there is no god, and that people should not believe everything they hear, we want to clarify that this is not our billboard. It was not paid for by us in part or in the whole. Nether were we involved in the design of the billboard.

We do want to thank the McElroy Rd. Church of Christ for advertising our thoughts on this important subject. But, frankly, it puzzles us that McElroy Rd. Church of Christ paid to put up this sign, aren’t they afraid to lose church members?

What do you think about this latest Atheist windfall?

Many thanks to Ohio.com and a hat tip to Julie for the Atheist link:-)

I can see how both sides can benefit from that sign. Very cool.

Perhaps the two statements should have been credited, like the old joke about the graffitti on an alley wall;

“God is dead!”-Fred.

“Fred is dead!”-God.
