Slaughterhouse-Five banned from Missouri High School

Read Time:2 Minute, 0 Second

Banning books like Slaughterhouse-Five is the first step to curtailing basic freedoms and doing it for Jesus is just another step toward brainwashing our youth into buying religion

To counter a Missouri high school board’s ban on Kurt Vonnegut’s satirical time-traveling novel “Slaughterhouse-Five,” the author’s memorial library says it will give 150 free copies of the book away.  They are to be congratulated for this, and I hope 150 high school students take them, read them, and then distribute them to all their friends.

Republic High School decided to pull all copies from library shelves and the curriculum in April after Wesley Scroggins, a home-schooling Missouri State University associate business professor, complained that “Slaughterhouse-Five” and similar books “create false conceptions of American history and government or that teach principles contrary to biblical morality and truth.”Contrary to “biblical morality?”

Has this guy ever read the Bible.  It is filled with mayhem, sex, and violence.  If anything should be banned it should be the Bible.

Sarah Ockler’s “Twenty Boy Summer,” a book about young romance, was also pulled from library shelves, although the board voted to keep Laurie Halse Anderson’s “Speak,” an award-winning book about date rape.

“It is shocking and unfortunate that those young adults and citizens would not be considered mature enough to handle the important topics raised by Kurt Vonnegut,” said Vonnegut library Executive Director Julia Whitehead in a statement. “Everyone can learn something from his book.”

The Vonnegut library’s Web site requested students from Republic High School to write in for the book if they’d like one. “We’re not telling you to like the book … we just want you to read it and decide for yourself,” the site reads.

Republic High School Superintendent Vern Minor told the Missouri new site News Leader that he was aware of the giveaway, but didn’t regret the board’s decision.

He says he thinks “Slaughterhouse-Five” is more appropriate for college students.

“It’s just one of those topics,” Minor said. “It just conjures up some strong emotions in people.”

“Slaughterhouse-Five” is a satirical novel that takes place during the bombing of the German city of Dresden in World War II.

Kurt Vonnegut died in April 2007.

Thoughts?  Should we start banning books in schools?  What do you think of the banning of Slaughterhouse – Five?

I think my sister read ‘Slaughterhouse-Five’ while she was in high-school, along with ‘A Clockwork Orange’ and ‘Catcher in the Rye.” I’m pretty sure I saw ‘Catch 22’ with her school books as well. I’m not sure if they were assigned or elective reading for an english class, or just personal choices, but they all came from our public high-school library in our little town of Washington Missouri. Not bad for backwoods inbreds.
Trouble with high-schools, whether you like it or not, agree with it or not, until the magic age of 18, you are dealing, by law, with children. Parents, through their school boards have a say in what information they feel is appropriate and should be available to said children, and if a majority of them want their libraries to be ‘PG-13,’ well… nothing is stopping kids from checking out whatever they want from the public library, parents from buying their kids books they think they should read, kids looking up books on the internet, or parents moving their kids out of Republic, Missouri.

Good post Bill. It’s the same old tune just a different verse. He who gets to their minds first controls their thoughts in the future. This jerk off apparently wasn’t satisfied with dumbing down his/her own kids but wants everyone else’s kids ti be dumb also.

Usually when a book is banned, people get curious, expect sales of Slaughterhouse-Five to rise. I didn’t read it until I was out of school, probably true of a lot of people.

Exactly ! Now I have to go out and get the book. You’d think that they’d catch on by now that banning books is next to burning books ! It doesn’t work. Ask Hitler !
