PETCO: Where the pets go to die
Why did at least 100 innocent, caged pets drown at PETCO store in New York?
There is no reason for the actions of some, and, in this case, it’s hard to understand why caged pets weren’t taken to safety in preparation for the New York flood. One can only hope that there will be a thorough investigation and those responsible will be held to account. PETCO’s logo says “where the pets go.” Perhaps, at least in this case, it should read “where the pets go to die.”
Here’s the sad, sad story:
When last week’s flood hit upstate New York, the Johnson City Petco failed to evacuate its animals—and 100 drowned. The news made its way across the blogosphere (see here for one example), and now the village mayor has called for a police investigation to see whether the deaths could have been prevented, noting that he believes the store had enough warning to react. “If someone was aware that those animals were in danger and didn’t take the appropriate action to remove them to safety then that is a crime under New York State Law” and charges could be filed against management, he said, adding that some employees may have asked to take the animals home and been told they could not.
On its company blog, Petco called it a “tragedy” and says the company accepts responsibility and will “take timely and appropriate steps to ensure that nothing like this can happen again.” Leaders from the company will meet with city officials later this week, WSYR reports, and PETA is looking to get involved.
What do you think should be done about this inexplicable animal cruelty and negligence with regard to these poor pets.?

“The mice ate the marijuana” was an excuse no more believable than “the dog ate my homework” for authorities in Argentina, where eight police officers have been fired over the disappearance of around 1,200 pounds of pot.
Evidentially the store manager considers the pets to be just more commodities for sale and not living breathing creatures. I hope the state of New York actively pursues this case. There is no excuse for this, there was plenty of warning and there are many groups that could have helped. Petco should be ashamed.
Why does this have so few responses? Why aren’t you all sharing this? SHAME! SHAME! SHAME!
Right on Jenny. Do they screen people who work there as they should? At a minimum, this is on the level of intentional negligent homicide.
The fact remains that whoever was managing that store didn’t care about the animals, and that begs the question: Why was this individual working at a pet store in the first place?
jenny40, I was thinking the same thing. From what I’ve seen of these stores, it’s beyond comprehension that one would be managed and staffed by individuals who would act with such disregard for the animals in their care.
