Bible bangers backing Newt!
It seems the faithful are flocking to the unfaithful: notorious adulterer and all around nasty guy, Newt Gingrich.
It is difficult to understand how the Republican Jesus Jumpers could possibly reconcile their family values nonsense with a candidate like nasty Newt.
His so called “religion” is newly found and only the blind and deaf couldn’t know that his so-called faith is purely designed for the masses. To believe now that Newt is born again based on what he’s said during the campaign must born out of desperation and not a clear understanding of the political system.
Faced with the prospect of a Mormon Mitt has apparently driven God’s children to the dark side because Newt, who has been married several times, and has a reputation as a womanizer, does not fit with the narrow profile of evangelical teachings.
Iowa evangelical, Steve Deace, an influential conservative radio host, is struggling with the possibility of Newt Gingrich being the standard bearer for family-values voters in the 2012 election. It’s a real conundrum, says Deace, that many others are also wrestling with:
“Maybe the guy in the race that would make the best president is on his third marriage,” he says. “How do we reconcile that?”
The casual listener, however, senses him trying:
“I see a lot of parallels between King David and Newt Gingrich, two extraordinary men gifted by God, whose lives include very high highs and very low lows,” Deace says.
David, after all, committed adultery with the ravishing Bathsheba, then had her husband killed, among other transgressions. The Bible makes room for complicated, morally compromised heroes. Now Christian conservatives, desperate for an alternative to Mitt Romney, are learning to do so as well.
“Under normal circumstances, Gingrich would have some real problems with the social-conservative community,” says Tony Perkins, head of the Family Research Council. “But these aren’t normal circumstances.”
The ability for Christians to rationalize and minimize in order to serve their own hypocrisy just boggles the mind.

Folks, I am still not drinking the Newt’s kool aid. Is it compromising when you meet yourself in the middle. Newt is simply searching for the right words to say to the right group of people. Newt is first, and foremost, interest in Newt. Are you forgetting how quick he jumped back and forth on the Ryan budget?
Many great men have had moral failings. It’s good to have a candidate that is not so entrenched that he thinks just supporting the display of The Ten Commandments everywhere means he’s capable of governing.
Gingrich understands how government and Washington work. Obama still doesn’t.
I’m not sure I followed the Ten Commandment reference Milton but I do believe Gingrich knows government. I choose to ignore your Obama comment 🙂
Christians are remarkably like all of us Liberals in that they recognize the need to compromise in choosing a candidate.
Virtually no candidate ever meets our Liberal Litmus Test. And sometimes when they do seem perfect on the campaign trail (like Barack Obama), they fall short in their actual ability to accomplish our mutual goals once elected.
P.S. Mike, the blog looks better every day. Bravo!!
Bob you are so right when you speak of compromise and your observations about our president. I do believe he has disappointed me more than any other president, only because of the high hopes I had. I suspect I’m not in the minority.
Thanks again for you kind words about MMA. If you have any suggestions for improvement please send me an email.
I don’t get this either. Newt wouldn’t know family values if he stepped in them. I do hear he likes animals so that is a plus.
Jeremy I also heard that he is an animal lover and a believer in environmental protections. That is a plus amid all the minuses.
