Screw Gold – I’m Buying C.C. Sabathia

Read Time:1 Minute, 44 Second

I admit it. I have no problem with my team spending big money to win baseball games. I guess it’s ironic I’m not a Yankee fan since they just gave pitcher C.C. Sabathia another 30 million to stay one more year.

The reality is we all want our teams to spend loads on money to put a winner on the field. Except the Cubs of course. They spend loads of money to put a loser on the field.
So the Yankees spent another 30 million. And C.C. Sabathia is no idiot like Joe the Plumber who would have turned it down because he would have had to pay more taxes. C.C. is taking the money because it was offered and he’s worth it. At least the Yankee ownership thinks he’s worth it. And they go to the playoffs every year. They must know how much a player is worth.

The only bad thing about athletes getting big money is the cliches they cite when asked about it. They always say they had to take care of their families. Former pitcher Mike Hampton took a big money deal from the Colorado Rockies once and said it was because they had good schools there. It does bug me when one of them gets a big money offer and turns it down saying they felt “insulted.” Mo Vaughn said that when the Red Sox made him an offer he could refuse. Then Vaughn went to California and got hurt or something and his career was over.

So maybe Mo wasn’t worth the money. You never really know if they’re worth the money till the contract is up anyway and World Series championships require at least one great pitcher as Tony LaRussa and Chris Carpenter just showed us. And nobody complains about $6 hot dogs and $8 beers when their team wins the World Series. And considering how relative everything is, if $8 for a beer isn’t so bad for a guy on Joe the Plumber’s wages, what’s 30 million to the owners of a major league baseball club?
