Girl Scouts of America: Lefty, Socialist Baby Killers

Read Time:4 Minute, 7 Second

So, this happened. The Girl Scouts of America put up a “media guide” on their website, suggesting that websites like Snopes.com and Media Matters were viable locations to find information countering the “urban myths” that permeate the Internet.

Now as we all know, Media Matters has a left wing slant to it, and anything that has a left wing slant is automatically filled with liars and devil worshipers. The right wing spin machine went nuts.

Glenn Beck’s oh so honest website, The Blaze, reported on the “disturbing” use of Media Matters as a go to site to disseminate information. As opposed to The Blaze. Another paragon of truth, Andrew Breibart, ran with the story as well, and of course, the shining star for journalistic integrity, Fox and Friends, were practically rabid as they interviewed Sydney Volanski, a 15 year old former Girl Scout, who left the organization in a huff when she (and her mom) discovered how LIBERAL the Girl Scouts were.

Sydney and her sister have created “Speak Now: Girl Scouts Website”, a font of information for other narrow minded families who believe that Media Matters is a socialist organization out to destroy America. I took a look at Speak Now, and if this site was created by two teenagers without any help from adults or right wing propaganda monsters, then I’m the Queen of Egypt. It’s all propaganda! There is a page entitled “The Planned Parenthood Connection,” where Planned Parenthood is labeled “pro abortion”, as if, like John Kyl believes, all PP DOES is perform abortions.

Then there is the “Girl Scout Heroines” page, which quite frankly, made me a little ill. Not because of the women listed, but because of the way they are portrayed on Speak Now. Billie Jean King is belittled because she is a lesbian, Betty Friedan, one of the greatest women’s rights activists in history is labeled a Marxist and slammed because she supports same sex relationships, Simone de Beauvoir, an amazing writer is called out for being a key player in France’s women’s liberation movement and Frances Perkins, the first woman to be appointed to the U.S Cabinet, who helped craft minimum wage laws and was the Secretary of Labor from 1933 to 1945, is not to be admired because she was gay.

On the left side of the home page for Speak Now is a page “Links We Love.” I clicked this warily, unsure that I wanted to know what links these narrow minded bigots “loved.” I was right to be afraid. Here are a few:

Focus on the Family
Abby Johnson Pro Life Advocate
Stand For The Family/Sharon Slater
Live Action/Lila Rose (Lila Rose dresses up like a hooker and tries to get PP employees to lie on camera. She’s a female James O’Keefe, and has worked with him in the past.)

I want to say one thing about Focus on the Family. All this chatter about Tim Tebow and the ad he and his mom made for Focus on the Family is important, as is the promotion of the values Focus on the Family espouses by Speak Now. Focus on the Family believes that homosexuality is evil, that homosexuality should be illegal and they support personhood amendments, where from the moment sperm meets egg, that is a life, and anyone who harms that little zygote should be imprisoned. THIS is the group that Speak Now is promoting.

Speak Now also lambastes a brilliantly funny and poignant play, “Simply Maria.” The play revolves around an Hispanic girl, Maria, and her struggles to become an independent woman in America. Her father tells her she can be anything she wants to be, but when Maria tells her parents she wants to go to college, they order her to get married. Maria has a nightmare about getting married, being attacked by a tortilla (symbolizing the battle with her Mexican heritage), having six children and never getting a college degree. I’ve read the play-it’s wonderful, moving and intelligent. And Speak Now HATES “Simply Maria”, saying it “mocks childbirth, motherhood, homemaking, purity and marriage.” The play was promoted by Girl Scouts of America, thus the Girl Scouts are evil and must be destroyed.

Here’s a thought, Sydney, and whatever conservative “helpers” you have working with you-this won’t work. Teenage girls have sex, teenage girls are gay, and teenage girls want to go to college rather than get married at the age of 16. The Girl Scouts are doing absolutely nothing wrong by trying to point young women in directions that disagree with your narrow minded and naive views of the world, but you are doing young women a great disservice by promoting bigotry, homophobia and factually inaccurate material on your website. I would bet that Media Matters will be taking YOU on in the very near future.

Okay so lets say there is this company. They do some good stuff. They do things that you really think are great for the country.
They did kill a couple million people. But thats not a big deal, y/know? Cuz they do lots of other good things, right?

I mean, Planned Parenthood “helps” with women and women’s health issues, but theyve only assisted in the death of a few million babies, ripping apart their bodies and tearing off their heads.

No big deal right.
You can murder babies, but as long as you do some -other good things- it shouldn’t matter, right?

Please people, examine the irony of your statements.

And about the girl scouts and college, I strongly support the idea of people going to college (and yes, I am a college grad myself), but I really don’t think its the end-all. Young girls who tell me they want to be mothers and housewifes earn the same respect from me then do girls who say they want to be President.

I just want to NOT thank you and all those others spreading this information for inciting people to verbal abuse and make in appropriate statements to my daughter and other girls who are girl scouts. Why don’t you explain to people where to vent their opinion rather than vent it on a 10 year old girl at a simple cookie booth trying to raise money to give to back to the community and homeless who came home crying after someone was so belligerent that they had to close the booth.

Again NOT Thank you!

How does the national organization feel about these people using “Girl Scouts” in the name of their web page? They don’t represent the views of the Scouts.

“Including all opinions.” Yes, the world may or may not be round, kids!

I’ve been a Girl Scout leader for 10 years and my meetings always start and end with ideas on each girl becoming a strong smart independent woman. I happen to be an registered Independent and strongly disagree with the Girl Scouts publishing anything that leans one way or another. My girls come from famlilies that are both Democrat and Republican and we all respect the others beliefs and opinions.

When an organization such as the Girl Scouts begin pushing one view they will simply alienate particular girls and that is just flat-out wrong.

No matter the girl’s political affiliation, they ALL equally plan to attend college and happen to be a group of high-achievers with the smartest and brightest planning to become a doctor-her political affiliation? Republican. Please stop with the lies and accusations of all Conservatives pushing girls and women to know their place; it’s simply not true.

Instead of being thrilled that they’re pushing your liberal ideas, rather you should be offended that they’re not including all opinions and staying clear of politics.. It could easily be that they’re quoting Conservative talking points or websites..How would you all feel then? It seems we’ve all become unable to put ourselves in anothers position and that’s a huge part of out problem nationally.

The irony is that they are not pushing any sort of agenda at all, but in the RWNJ world, anything that does not “jive” with their extremely narrow view of the world is immediately branded as “evil”. Planned Parenthood is an excellent resource for teens who are either already sexually active or considering becoming sexually active. John Kyl LIED when he stated, on the floor of the Senate, that abortions account for 99% of everything Planned Parenthood does. As to Media Matters and Snopes-yes, Media Matters has a left wing slant, but it is my opinion that the reason for that is Fox news. Fox news lies the way most people breathe and in order to combat that, Media Matters has to be the antithesis of NewsCorp, i.e, liberal and honest. Insulting women who are heroes because of their sexual orientation, or because they (GASP) support LGBT equality is not what I consider independent thinking, I consider that following the RWNJ herd right off the cliff.

There is no DOUBT that Media Matters is completely Left-wing. It simply does not matter why you think they exist; it does not belong in any Girl Scout publication. I watch all the cable news shows and catch Msnbc lying as often as Foxnews- being an Independent I can see clearly both ways when the Pundits on both channels start in….

Girls Scouts of America is not interested in jumping into politics and this Media Matters link was clearly a mistake.
They exist solely to empower girls; a wonderful thing they’ve been doing longer than any other organization.
Can we all agree on that at least?

Well the boy scouts need a counterpart who will fit into the barefoot and pregnant model. Thats where we’re at in the culture war, Fox won’t stop until even children in the scouts are bitterly divided by their hatred and paranoia.

Why would they bother going to a science and technology magnet if they don’t believe in college or a career? Shouldn’t they be working on landing a husband so they can pop out babies at his command?

I wondered that as well. I guess it’s okay for THEM to get an education, simply so they can create more websites that belittle, malign and lie. Or as Rachel Maddow put it-It’s Okay If You’re A Republican.

Too bad

Don’t worry. The right wing freak out apparently worked. Girl Scouts of America will no longer be linking to Media Matters. At least the Girl Scouts are learning the important lessons in life. Bitch and moan, you too can get what you want.

Scouting, in general, is wonderful training for leadership. RWNJ’s want to restrict leadership opportunities to the white male Right. I will be calling the local council this year, to arrange cookies for 24 housing units instead of my usual solo mint binge.

Like I need a reason to buy Girl Scout cookies! As to their ingredients, lighten up. High fructose corn syrup is not the best source of carbohydrates, but rat poison? They’re a once a year indulgence. Frankly I miss the mouth feel of Tagalongs (the chocolate covered peanut butter patties) made with palm kernal oil (replaced with a much less saturated fat a few years back).

Are they still making those cookies with High Fructose Corn Syrup? If so, (IMHO) you might as well eat rat poison. Originally the girls made their own cookies. Now they’re probably made in China by ten year olds. The empire lurches forward.

When I was little, I wanted to be a girl scout/brownie scout. All my friends were, and I wanted to sell cookies, dang it. But now I’m a little older…and nothing has changed, except maybe my reasons for joining have matured a little. Can you join Girl Scouts at fourteen?

I never got to be a girl scout because I was a boy scout. I don’t remember talking about anything but camping and ribbons and trimmed fingernails and such.

The correct name of the organization is Girl Scouts of the USA or GSUSA. Maybe a good place for the “Speak Now” folks to start is to identify the organization correctly. Also, as a staff person at a Girl Scout council, it is crazy how many people read these things, and call in about the sensitive issues demanding explanations.

Girl Scouts does not take a stand on any sensitive issues. It is not the basis of any programming provided. Like any other activities planned for a Girl Scout troop, it is up to the girls and their leader how they approach any sensitive issue (sex, sexuality, etc). Parental permission must be granted in order for a girl to participate in activity involving a sensitive matter.

No matter how many times this comment is reinforced, there will always be a way to discredit an event speaker, etc. if that is what a person is looking to do. It is really sad.

I will continue working daily to provide girls with the best leadership experience in the world…80% of women business owners and 65% of congresswomen were Girl Scouts. Not sure very many other organizations can boast those statistics and stand firmly behind them. Thank you for buying cookies and helping a girl learn business ethics, goal setting, customer service, money management and countless other skills. You are supporting tomorrow’s leaders.

Mary-Thank you! I never got to be a Girl Scout because I spent all my free time taking ballet lessons and driving my mother crazy, but I have friends who were and they loved it. I have never looked at the GSUSA as anything but a positive experience for girls and young women, and I will never stop buying Thin Mints. Please do not ever stop selling them-I would weep.

I am a girl scout leader, I LOVED when I noticed during a girl scout event that they had updated the promise about respecting authority to respecting authority, except when you felt strongly that you needed to oppose it. I wish I could find it somewhere else, but still.

Girl scouts is strongly for making girls into leaders and also has a lot of programs pushing science/technology and equality. That doesn’t sound like something super right wing folks would espouse anyway for their girls. I hope those girls are the ones that benefit most from it.

I agree Oni. That doesn’t sound very Right Wingy under any circumstance.

How dare the Girl Scouts of America treat females as more then baby factories in training! This socialistic and satanic organization must be stopped before those girls start thinking for themselves instead of letting a man take charge of their lives like god intended!

/end snark.
