Medievia: A Game Like No Other

Read Time:3 Minute, 35 Second

A few days ago, a friend asked me when I started writing. Without pausing, I replied “I started writing for The Medievia Mudslinger.”

I then realized that my friend had no idea what The Medievia Mudslinger was, or what the hell I was talking about. Rather than explain it to one person, I thought I would share what I believe to be the best online game available.

Medievia is a MUD, or multi user dungeon. Five years ago when I discovered Medievia, I had no idea what a MUD was, what hit roll and damage roll were or what a blast a text game could be. I’d never played Dungeon and Dragons, never played a text game, and was woefully unprepared for Medievia. My first character was Emora, a warrior. It started out badly. Luckily, I met another player named Sjif who looked at me and pretty much gagged. He dragged me around, finding equipment for me and suddenly, I stopped dying every fifteen minutes, and began to move towards my next class.

I now have four heroes on Medievia, one of whom became a reporter for The Mudslinger. Her name is Loreis, and she is not only a hero, but an Avatar and a Legend. An Avatar is a hero who knows the game well enough, and has the personality, for helping new players acclimate themselves to this new “world.” A Legend is a hero who has so many children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren that they receive a special description next to their name, their own communications channel and the pride of knowing the game inside and out.

Medievia has been around twenty years. It is the brainchild of Michael Krause, or Vryce in the game. Vryce is a harsh task master, but he is a genius of the first order. His wife, Dianne, a French teacher, is Soleil, the lovely goddess who is the love of his life, both in Medievia and in reality. Together, they have created a world that in constantly changing, constantly growing and consistently challenging and fun.

Medievia is free. FREE. As in, no subscription fees, no zones closed to people who haven’t paid and no equipment off limits. There are donation items available for money, but you don’t HAVE to buy them. In fact, every year at this time, Medievia offers a donation item sale, but again, you are not forced to purchase anything. I highly recommend it, simply because I hoard and one of the donation items is a container into which I’m pretty sure you can fit a horse. I’ve never tried that-the horses in Medievia are stubborn creatures, unwilling to be lifted and shoved into a bag or satchel.

Let me give you a quick overview of Medievia. You log in, and choose a class: brute warrior, healing cleric, backstabbing thief or powerful mage. You receive an almanac with equipment recommendations for low levels, and you begin the Learning Module, a tutorial you control. Slowly, you learn about your class, how to fly on a dragon, where to find a horse, what to do in a formation, and other necessary information to help you with your first class. Upon reaching level 31, you venture high above Medievia to Mount Vryce, and choose your next class. When you have mastered all four classes, you become a hero. A global “echo” resonates through the land, and you now can begin your life as a hero in Medievia.

What will you do? Will you rule the high seas as a serpent hero, slaughtering massive beasts that lay in wait deep beneath the ocean floor? Or will you challenge other heroes to heroic battles, earning a permanent “champion hero” tag and magnificent mount? Will you be like Loreis, a reporter, and write about adventures for all to read? Perhaps making a large fortune in gold as a trader, selling goods from town to town is more to your liking.

Come see the game. Visit www.medievia.com, read my articles, play a while. I think you’ll find what I found 5 years ago-a fun and exciting game that gives you that extra something you won’t find anywhere else: a place to use your imagination.

Loreis-out!

I used to play Medievia. I started when I was 18 and I played a LOT for a few years. My character name was Dault. I tapered off as time went on. I really got off on sneaking around and backstabbing other players with my adamantite kris. Ha. Anyway, I’m now 35 and I log in about once a year because I’m still curious. It’s a great game and incredibly addicting; and that was the problem. I feel that it was so addicting I lost a lot of time basically playing a game. Time staring at a screen playing a game when I could have been out with friends, or with a girl, or learning another language, starting a business..anything! Time you can’t get back. Time in the real world which is all we truly have.

Medievia is a really fun game if you can stand Vryce’s ego.

And it is free, unless you want the better equipment. At that point you have to pay $ or pay in time (volunteer).

Other than that, it’s great. And I’m not being sarcastic. The game is huge and there is a lot to do. The community is fantastic.

It is so much fun. I was hooked 15 minutes in. You’ll love it, plus Vryce is adding, over the next months, pets, PLANETS, undersea trading, and so much more.

I HAVE to check this game out. I think I’ll wait until someone gives me an iPad for Christmas. Then I again I could be waiting a long, long time.
