College will brainwash your children

Read Time:3 Minute, 46 Second

In his State of the Union speech Tuesday evening, President Obama spoke about college, and the need to make higher education less expensive. He spoke about his desire to make college affordable and accessible to every America. Rick Santorum interpreted this as an attempt to indoctrinate American youth into liberalism.

Mr. Santorum said in a speech to Floridians gathered at The First Baptist Church of Naples that churches and families were under “assault” by liberals and President Obama. He said “we’ve lost the entertainment industry”, meaning, obviously, that the entertainment industry is specifically aimed at destroying fundamentalist Christian values. He then continued by saying “We’ve lost our higher education. That was the first to go a long time ago. It’s no wonder President Obama wants every kid to go to college. The indoctrination that occurs at American universities is one of the keys to the left holding and maintaining power in America-and it is indoctrination.”

Rick Santorum went to college. He didn’t attend Oral Roberts University or Bob Jones, he attended state college in Pennsylvania. He doesn’t strike me as a victim of liberal indoctrination. Newt Gingrich attended Emory College and Tulane University. Emory University was founded by Methodists, and is not what one would consider a liberal indoctrination club. Mitt Romney received his undergraduate degree from Brigham Young University. So, where are all these brainwashing colleges?

Obviously, Harvard, since President Obama received his education there. Unfortunately, so did William Kristol, one of the most conservative analysts and commentators in America. Kristol in the founder and editor of The Weekly Standard and a frequent guest on Fox News. George W. Bush graduated from Harvard business school after graduating from Yale. Mitt Romney, after receiving his undergraduate degree from BYU attended, you guessed it, Harvard.

Rick Santorum, in his speech to Florida Baptists, bemoaned the lack of Judeo-Christian teachings in “liberal” colleges. Well, that’s not entirely accurate. Most colleges teach theology, offering degrees in religious studies and theology. What Santorum wants is Bible class. He wants colleges that receive federal funding to teach creationism and Bible study, he wants them to promote Judeo-Christian values, not just teach theology. He wants Christianity to be forced upon every American college student, whether they like it or not. I’m sorry, who’s indoctrinating who here?

Santorum used a statistic found in many Christian college pamphlets: 62% of college students who enter college with a faith conviction leave without it. Bob Jones loves to trumpet this, and even has hypothetical college students who end their own lives, or become infected with AIDS, because they once were Christian, but then attended a horrible, evil secular college, and it all went to hell in a hand basket. My husband went to a secular college, and did not, upon graduation, suddenly stop being Catholic or begin to question his faith. That happened years later, in no small part because of people like Rick Santorum.

Last month, Santorum used the same rhetoric when he warned voters in Iowa that colleges had become “indoctrination centers for the left.” Rick Santorum believes that secular colleges, like the ones HE attended, are destroying America, attacking families and creating a generation of liberal zombies who will limp to the left and vote for Democrats for the rest of their lives. In my opinion, that makes Rick Santorum several things: a hypocrite, an idiot and someone who wants to take what our Founding Fathers tried to do-create a republic based in no small part on freedom of religion-and flush that ideal down the toilet.

The fringe, which is now the uber-far right, believes this drivel. They believe that secular colleges are dangerous, because Sky Cat forbid kids should receive a well rounded education, expand their horizons and (GASP) learn about a few religions other than Christianity. I had someone tell me a few weeks ago that since Christianity was good enough for Jesus, it should be good enough for America. We won’t get into what I was called when I correctly pointed out that Jesus was Jewish.

There is an ignorance running through America like a runaway train, and the far right will do anything to keep that train a-runnin’. When it comes to indoctrination and brainwashing, the left has a lot to learn from the right. We suck at it, to be honest, but the right? They have it down pat.

Please do tell, what were you called when you correctly pointed out that Jesus was Jewish?

Yeah, right — our kids should attend shitholes like Liberty, Regent, Oral Roberts or Bob Jones.

Brainwash academies, nothing more.

There are law firms who have refused to hire “graduates” of Liberty or Regent (they can’t come out and say so because they will get sued, but it’s pretty much understood).

Scrotorum thinks all kids should be homeschooled like his.

I notice no one stopped HIM from going to college…for all the GOOD it did.

I truly think the Republicans feel this election is Obama’s. Period. With that premise in mind, they’re using up their “throwaway” candidates, the ones they see as expendable in order to save the “good ones” for 2016.

I think they’ve misjudged a couple of things though; most tellingly, the life expectancy of the Republican party when these “expendable” candidates are so full of themselves they’re taking the party down with ’em.

Just my 2 cents, is all.

You are 100% correct.

They are looking for a sacrificial lamb.

They have nothing else.

I think President Obama is going to make LBJ’s 1964 trouncing of Barry Goldwater seem like a Girl Scout jamboree by comparison.

This is a brilliant tactic for someone who wants to become president. Work to kill off what is left of our educated work force and those capable of spearheading our technological development that is so vital for a modern economy. And he is one of the top choices the right can provide? How can this not be political suicide.

What Santorum really wants is an uneducated population that hasn’t learned to think for itself so he can impose his own brand of twisted Catholic doctrine instead. I attended a secular college (even though my father would have preferred I go to a school run by Jesuits, but my faith was already gone, killed off by twelve years of Catholic grade and high school.

Santorum doesn’t want to be president, he wants to be pope. He’s so full of santorum his eyes are brown.
