St. Louis Cards to sign Roy Oswalt

The Cardinals had been reported to be the front-runner for right-hander Roy Oswalt’s services late Friday night, according to multiple reports.
The Boston Red Sox, Texas Rangers and Houston Astros were also believed to be in the mix, according to multiple reports.
The Cardinals appeared to have a full rotation with Chris Carpenter, Adam Wainwright, Jaime Garcia, Kyle Lohse and Jake Westbrook, so its uncertain exactly how Oswalt fits in for St. Louis. With six starters and only five rotation spots, someone will be left out of the mix, likely Lohse or Westbrook.
The Cardinals had a $5 million offer on the table for Oswalt several weeks ago, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported on Wednesday. The terms of Oswalt’s deal are unknown.
Last season with Philadelphia, Oswalt made only 23 starts due to lingering back problems. The 34-year-old went 9-10 with a 3.69 ERA.
