Former PA Senator Rick Santorum is putting his campaign on hold right now as he has a bigger battle to handle. His daughter Bella suffers from Trisomy 18 (also known as Edwards Syndrome),a rare genetic disorder caused by the presence of all or part of an extra 18th chromosome.

Yesterday, Rick Santorum’s daughter (just 3 years old) was admitted to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP).

Infants born with Trisomy 18 (Edwards syndrome) may have kidney malformations, structural heart defects at birth, intestines protruding outside the body (omphalocele), esophageal atresia, mental retardation, growth deficiency, feeding difficulties, breathing difficulties, and suffer from many other abnormalities. Many children born with this disease don’t survive beyond one year. In fact, many fetuses die before being born. And, when children are born with Trisomy 18, many die due to just one problem popping up and depleting the immune system further. Then more problems compound from there.

“Rick and his wife Karen are admitting their daughter Bella to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia this evening,” spokesman Hogan Gidley said in a statement Saturday night, adding “Rick intends to return to Florida and resume the campaign schedule as soon as is possible.” Santorum had been scheduled to appear on NBC’s “Meet the Press” and attend church in Miami. Officials did not cancel Sunday’s afternoon events in Sarasota and Punta Gorda.

Bella Santorum’s condition is so deadly that even a common cold can result in death.

So many problems and all thanks to a mutation. The very kind of mutation that Santorum claims cannot happen because evolution is a lie and god created us in his image.

Of course I in no way think what has occurred to his daughter is justified. It is a random occurrence and is no ones ‘fault’. At least he does not live up to his claims of leaving things up to his god and actually takes his daughter to specialists who can understand and, hopefully, treat the symptoms of the disorder.

It just angers me that Santorum is doing so much to fight against the only thing that can aid his own daughters life. There is nothing but sadness to this whole thing.

As a retired teacher, I love children and their pain is mine ! Evolution and genetics can be a bitch.

This is terrible. I feel for her and the whole family. I can’t imagine being a parent and having this happen to your child.

Poor baby. So young to battle such a terrible disease. I hope she recovers from this setback. I’ve seen her in photos-she’s adorable.
