The Holy Bible: A traveler’s guide to the subjugation of women

In American society, misogyny is rampant and is the sole reason why there exists gender inequality in almost every area of life.

It started with and continues to revolve around the dominant religion of our country, Christianity, and its guilt about sex, its insistence on female subjection and its dread of female seduction. The sole instigator is man identified as Paul of Tarsus. St. Paul’s epistles contain such outright misogynous statements that many modern scholars have come to the conclusion that he was probably either overtly or latently homosexual.

I used to wonder why a woman would choose a religion that would immediately put her in a position of subjugation to another human being. But after thinking about it for a while, it became apparent that many of these women have been either physically, mentally or verbally abused by their husbands, fathers or other influential men in their lives, or have been abandoned by them. Having been taught that Christ will never leave them or forsake them and has nothing but pure love for them, some of these women have replaced their abusive husbands with Christ, and their fathers with Yahweh. Others have come from deeply and traditionally religious families where it was taken for granted that women were viewed as unequal to a man, or equal but with different roles. This reeks with the famous line from George Orwell’s “Animal Farm” that “All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others.”

Of course, the entire Christian faith is based on credulous servility. I have had many Christian men and women tell me that their religion is not misogynist, and that they revere women and that their religion fosters a respect for the female sex for a variety of reasons. This is patently untrue. The simple and unarguable fact is that misogyny is fundamental to the basic writings of Christianity and it is such an intricate part of religious society that entire movements needed to be undertaken to make the advances that women have achieved in recent US history. The right for women to vote, testify in court and own land are more recent than many people are aware. Women are still paid less than men who hold the same jobs and most of the Christian women that I know freely admit that they are subject to the authority of their husbands.

In the bible, women are basically commanded to accept a role of inferiority and to be shameful for the simple fact that they are women. Misogynistic biblical verses are so common that if one opens a bible to a random page, the odds are pretty good that you’ll find one close to wherever your finger lands. What makes me shake my head is that Christian women will defend these passages, and many times will use apologetics that were written by misogynist Christian men. They easily justify it by trying to reason in various ways, but in the end, it always comes down to “because god said so”

If anyone would like more truth about misogyny in the Bible check out the book by Barbara G. Walter, “Man Made God”. An excellent read from a woman’s point of view. As a man it is definitely one of my favorite books.

Hooray!! Finally the truth is told! Misogyny “invented” religion to control and subjugate all women. Why? Because weak, jealous, cowardly men couldn’t stand their sexual and intellectual power over them (or the thought that other men would have sex with them or steal them away). So they wrote up “rules and regulations” (i.e. religion) in order to control women, and to show them “who” is “boss” (muscle power, not brain power). Hence, the real reason behind religion and the violence toward women (that has lasted for thousands of years). Note: if we get rid of male-dominated religions, equality would once again flourish as it once did in hunter-gatherer societies (pre-religion era).

Thanks for this site, Al!

– And you couldn’t give us even ONE example?

John, here are some examples for you from the New Testament:
1 Corinthians 11:3-9, Ephesians 5:22-24, Colossians 3:18, 1 Timothy 2:11-14, Titus 2:5, 1 Peter 3:1-6
All of these verses speak of an inferior/subjugated position for the woman. Simply because she is a woman. Woman who do not marry hold a higher position and what they want from life matters. The act of marriage lessens your worth and what you want no longer matters unless it is what you husband wants. Before you say I do you are equal to your husband after the I do’s you are less and what you want is irrelevant unless your lucky and it happens to meet with his approval. Solution for woman don’t get married. The only way for a christian woman to matter in life is to stay single. Christian men will woo you in the dating stage and make think you are the most important person in the world to them. However, after you say I do it is all about them and they will use the bible to prove it.

It doesn’t matter what religion it is. The books aren’t written by any “God” they are written by men. Men with their own agendas and their own biased beliefs.

The one thing all these books have in common is the desire for the “God” of said book to have people treat each other with love, respect and faith. “God” always seems to want us to treat each other well and care for each other.

Then the writers get all crazy and start talking beatings, burnings and revenge. Talk about ghost writers.

I do not know how anyone, possessing a trace of objectivity, could look at the life of Paul and not conclude that there is at least an even possibility the man was simply crazy. The only consistent thing in his life was fanaticism.

I still am utterly confused as to why women will put their god ahead of their family ! Jesus said so? If you want to go to heaven? (you know that imaginary place that religious people are anxious to go to). I would have thought that the maternal instinct would have overpowered the fairy tale beliefs by the 21st century. I guess it doesn’t. I think fathers and paternal instinct are way under-rated!
