Taliban suspends peace talks-Karzai tells NATO to get out

Read Time:1 Minute, 0 Second

If there we ever a time to take advantage of a bad thing now would be the time, with a frustrated enemy and an unfriendly government in Afghanistan perhaps we should be telling our troops to pack.

The Afghan Taliban suspended talks with the US “until they show willingness in carrying out their promises instead of wasting time,” the group said in a statement today, according to al-Jazeera. The group complained of America’s “alternating and ever-changing position” and said it would put off opening a political office in Doha, the Washington Post reports. Al-Jazeera has the full text of the Taliban statement here.

And that was just the start of the bad news for US forces: Hamid Karzai has now demanded that NATO clear out of all Afghan villages and all its bases in rural areas, the BBC reports. Karzai now wants Afghanistan to take the lead on its own security by 2013, he told Leon Panetta, who is concluding a visit to Kabul today. Karzai also wants a new memorandum of understanding barring US soldiers from entering Afghan homes without search warrants.

I think that’s what we should have done to begin with. History has been unkind to invaders and now we’re just another bunch of losers doomed to failure in the desert.

When this thing started in Afghanistan Hamid Karzai should have been their to stop the crap that led to us getting tangled in this mess. We have been there too long now, but until NATO feel that it has accomplished what it feels it needs to he needs to shut up. When we pull out it will be only a marginal period of time before that country is right back where it was before we went in there. Before we consider entering another of this backwoods countries we need to understand that we don’t understand the people nor their cultures. If there is a problem there. next time bomb the crap out of it and stay the hell out.

Bill, I get the feeling we will be reliving the 80’s all over again. This is a nightmare.

80’s hell Erin. This harks back to my days in the 60’s and 70’s in ‘Nam. We just can’t seem to get the message on this war thing. You can’t go into the other guy’s country and defeat them much less occupy it. We have a war in Korea that hasn’t ended yet, a loss in Vietnam, a barely win in Iraq, if you can call that a win, and now we just trying to get the hell out of Afghanistan. If we listen to the damned Repubs they will have us fighting in Iran or Syria. Dammit, it is time to come home and focus on us for a change. We have politicians over here arguing about crap that they shouldn’t be while we people dying in a country that doesn’t want us there. How screw up is that.
