Who the f*ck is voting for Rick Santorum?

Read Time:3 Minute, 38 Second

Our intrepid leader, Mad Mike, asked me yesterday “Who the bleep is voting for Rick Santorum??” I wanted to give him an answer, but in order to be accurate, I needed to do a bit of work. Demographics, especially among primary voters, are hard to come by, so I used a few tricks, old fashioned leg work and a little snark to come up with the following answers.

The New York Times has a fairly strange graph/dot thing up that shows why and who voted in 13 states. It’s slightly confusing because it uses reasons like “Moral character” directly above statistical data like “17-29.” We would infer from this that young people between the ages of 17 and 29, with high moral character, voted for Santorum in Mississippi. Also voting for Santorum in Mississippi were “True conservatives” and people who consider themselves “Very conservative.”

In Alabama, it gets a little more convoluted. Again, we find the very conservative voting for Santorum, but they also voted for Gingrich. Moral character was a deciding factor, the age rages was 18-29, and voters like his “Independence.” The truly odd thing about Alabama is that quite a few women voted for Santorum.

Rick Santorum kicked ass in Tennessee with 65% of the vote. Again, 18-29 year olds voted for Santorum, along with the true or very conservative. His abortion views played a large role in Tennessee, along with his Catholicism. In Iowa, Santorum scored with voters concerned with abortion, and folks making less than $50,000 a year. And once again, young people figured heavily along with true or very conservative voters.

For argument’s sake, let’s focus on Mississippi for this article. Here are a few statistics about Mississippi:

High school graduates: 79.6% compared to a national average of 85% (2006-2010)

Bachelor’s degree or higher: 19.5% compared to a national average of 27.9% (2006-2010)

Median household income: $37,881 compared to a national average of $51,914 (2006-2010)

Persons below the poverty line: 21.2% compared to a national average of 13.8% (2006-2010)

Per capita money income in past 12 months (2010 dollars) (2006-2010): $19,977 compared to a national average of $27,334.

In November of 2011, NPR featured an article about SNAP, or food stamps. Mississippi has the most people on food stamps in the country, 24% of the population. Mississippi is also the most obese state in America, again according to the NPR article, with 7 out of 10 adults classified as overweight or obese. So, we have a poor, predominantly white, predominantly undereducated, deeply religious and very conservative state voting for Rick Santorum. In recent surveys taken by Public Policy Polling, 29% of surveyed Republicans in Mississippi believe interracial marriage should be illegal and 66% do not believe in evolution. A huge number, 52%, believe President Obama is a Muslim and 36% aren’t sure. These people are voting for Rick Santorum. Why? Because they’re terrified.

If you realize that all this hate and bigotry and ignorance comes from honest to God fear, it’s easier to understand. These are Southern, white, conservative Christians, who feel like they woke up one day and we had a “colored” president with a foreign name. They inhale the drivel spewed by Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity and Family Research Council and David Barton and all the hysterical fear mongers on the right, and their eyes get as big as dinner plates when they listen to ignoramuses scream “Socialism! Communism! They’re comin’ for your GUNS!” And those people are voting for Rick Santorum.

I told Mad Mike he wouldn’t like the answer, but here it is anyway. Who the bleep is voting for Rick Santorum? People who love Velveeta Jesus. You know; not real Jesus, but blander and less scary than the actual Jewish guy who had dark skin and told us to be nice to each other. Velveeta Jesus is blonde and has blue eyes and carries an M-16 to shoot the “libtards” and the “gays.” Those are the patriotic Americans voting for Rick Santorum.

Thank you to my husband for Velveeta Jesus, The New York Times, NPR and the US Census.

You know Erin, you actually nail it very close for someone lives way the hell north of Mississippi and Alabama. I once had a young man tell me that Alabama had the best governors in the country. I asked him why he thought that. He said, “Because our governor has a balanced budget every year.” When I tried to explain to him that it was state law that the governor had to have a balanced budget not only in this state but in every state, he just stared at me in disbelief. The sad part is that these people are breeding and reproducing. I guess I am the dumb one though. I have lived here all my life and have not yet figured out how to escape.
