Fox News coverage of Trayvon Martin Case criticized

If true the appearance of a heretofore unknown witness claiming that Martin attacked Zimmerman could turn this case on its heels, both embarrassing and vindicating more than a few.  It would vindicate the police department and embarrass their critics. Unfortunately no amount of witnesses will restore Trayvon Martin’s beating heart.

ORLANDO – A witness we haven’t heard from before paints a much different picture than we’ve seen so far of what happened the night 17-year-old Trayvon Martin was shot and killed.

The night of that shooting, police say there was a witness who saw it all.

Our sister station, FOX 35 in Orlando, has spoken to that witness.

What Sanford Police investigators have in the folder, they put together on the killing of Trayvon Martin few know about.

The file now sits in the hands of the state attorney. Now that file is just weeks away from being opened to a grand jury.

It shows more now about why police believed that night that George Zimmerman shouldn’t have gone to jail.

Zimmerman called 911 and told dispatchers he was following a teen. The dispatcher told Zimmerman not to.

And from that moment to the shooting, details are few.

But one man’s testimony could be key for the police.

“The guy on the bottom who had a red sweater on was yelling to me: ‘help, help…and I told him to stop and I was calling 911,” he said.

Trayvon Martin was in a hoodie; Zimmerman was in red.

The witness only wanted to be identified as “John,” and didn’t not want to be shown on camera.

His statements to police were instrumental, because police backed up Zimmerman’s claims, saying those screams on the 911 call are those of Zimmerman.

“When I got upstairs and looked down, the guy who was on top beating up the other guy, was the one laying in the grass, and I believe he was dead at that point,” John said.

Zimmerman says the shooting was self defense. According to information released on the Sanford city website, Zimmerman said he was going back to his SUV when he was attacked by the teen.

Sanford police say Zimmerman was bloody in his face and head, and the back of his shirt was wet and had grass stains, indicating a struggle took place before the shooting.

Hey Bill the operating word here is know. We know very little about what happened that evening so we shouldn’t be assuming anything should we?

Hey jimmy, look at the facts that we do know. As I pointed out. Police – “Are You Following him?” Zimmerman – “Yeah” Police – “We Don’t need you to be doing that.” Martin (on phone with girl friend) “Why you following me?” Martin was armed with skittles and a can of Tea. Zimmerman was armed with a 9 mm pistol.

Neighborhood watch Instructions as given by National Crime Prevention Council:
“Emphasize that Watch groups are not vigilantes and should not assume the role of the police. Their duty is to ask neighbors to be alert, observant, and caring—and to report suspicious activity or crimes immediately to the police.”(http://www.ncpc.org/topics/home-and-neighborhood-safety/neighborhood-watch)

So, with those facts in mind we can conclude a couple of things. Zimmerman was following Martin first in his vehicle then on foot. Martin could well have perceived Zimmerman as a stalker under the Florida self defense law. A fight ensued that would not have happened if Zimmerman had not be playing cop and simply reported his perception of suspicious behavior as mandated by the rules of neighborhood watch. Had Zimmerman stayed in a vehicle it would not happened.

Granted there are still facts to be brought forth but the police immediately made a decision who was the aggressor with full consideration and left Zimmerman armed.

The police, Zimmerman, and the Florida law have all been their own worst enemy in this case. First, why do we not know all of these facts? The police did not disclose them as they should have. If this shooting had been done by a trained police officer he would immediately been pulled from the street and placed on restricted duty until a through investigation was completed and the facts were made public. Why then, would Zimmerman, at a minimum, not have his gun seized for investigative purposes, and a thorough investigation conducted an d the findings made public. At no point during this entire month has the police stepped forward and offered an investigative report.
Secondly, the role of Mr Zimmerman as part of neighborhood watch was to notify police of a “suspicious” person. In my 40+ years of criminal justice experience have never saw, or heard of, a civilian getting involved in police type activities when the situation didn’t end up going from bad to worse. In this case, for example, who was actually trying to defend himself, Martin or Zimmerman. Martin was a young (as far as anyone knows) walking down the street when found himself being followed by someone he did not know. Question: According to this idiotic law he was well within his rights to stop and “STAND HIS GROUND”, thus making Zimmerman the assaulter. OR Had Zimmerman, stayed in his vehicle, called the police and let them do their job, this incident would not have occurred.
Third, this is a stupid law. It should be called the “KILL OR BE KILLED” law. To allow people on a public street to become threatened and then suddenly become the aggressor is bone headed, stupid, and just plain asking for situations like this to happen.
Finally, whether this kid’s name is Trey, Trayvon, or whether he was black, white, autistic, perfectly normal or not, makes no difference. A young man is dead for no good reason. We do know that he was being followed – Zimmerman states that. We do know that Zimmerman was wrong to do that – the police said that. The question is, did Martin feel threatened and if so did HE have a right to stand his ground. While was defending himself, he was shot and killed by Zimmerman.

Not to be indelicate and sounding like I’m not sympathetic to the victim’s family, because I am, but if Trayvon had been named “Trey” and he was white it would have made news for a day. The shooter has been convicted without trial and without the evidence being heard just because he killed a black man. This isn’t the first time shit like this has happened.

If his name was Trey and he was white……Zimmerman wouldn’t have followed him or suspected anything wrong. Zimmerman is lying thru his racist teeth.

Come on people. Autistic? No evidence of that whatsoever. Called 9-1-1? Ridiculous and again unsupported. Shooter says “coon” while running? Debunked. They were breath sounds. Cops are all racists? Ludicrous. This is how bull shit rolls and innocent people are sent to the gallows. Stick to the facts, not a load of crap sensationalized by professional race baiters like Al Sharpton and a corrupt media driven by ratings.

Agree with Jason. Trayvon also allegedly called 9-1-1.

I seriously doubt this is the whole story. Could it have devolved into a fight prior to the shooting, yes. However, it is known that Zimmerman followed Treyon Martin, an autistic 17 year old. Who here has seen Rain Man? Autistic people freak out when touched by strangers, people they don’t trust. If Treyon did fight, it was because he felt threated first. Still to me, not a valid reason to shoot and kill someone when the police said on the 911 tapes not to follow him. Neighborhood watch is about reporting suspicious activity to the police, not vigilante justice as was clearly attempted here, imo.
