Your grandfather’s iPad from 1935

Read Time:1 Minute, 4 Second

Amazon recently announced that in 2011 electronic book sales surpassed those of the printed variety. The exploding sales of the iPad, Nook and Kindle being the reason for publishing history being made.

In April 1935, the issue of Everyday Science and Mechanics included this graphic (see below) which was to be the next logical step in the world of publishing. A microfilm reader mounted on a large pole, the media device was supposed to let you sit back in your favorite chair while reading your latest purchase.

Just goes to show how right technology prophets can be, yet at the same time, how wrong they can be on how the future would be delivered to the consumer. Microfilm was pretty popular back in the 1930s, so its logical that technologically minded journalists would have a guess on the future of publishing. The New York Times began copying all of its editions onto microfilm in 1935.

Its not easy being a prophet, especially when it comes to technology, I am pretty sure the future of publishing and related technologies will be entirely different to how they are being perceived in 2012.
