Only ‘two flies’ allowed in Beijing public restrooms
In an attempt to bring tourist restrooms up to a more acceptable standard, Beijing authorities have issued new guidelines on cleanliness and fly control. It is now illegal for there to be more than two flies in any of the Chinese capital’s many public restrooms.
The new ‘two fly’ rule is accompanied by another regulation regarding ‘discarded items’ (I think it means trash) no more than two ‘discarded items’ are allowed.
Odor control and regular cleaning are being stepped up to make one of life’s necessities a little less of an ordeal for foreign tourists.
Something similar was tried during the 2008 Beijing Olympics. It was not a total success. A friend of mine was in China for the games and told me she often took a cab back to her hotel to use the bathroom. She did this after one gut wrenching experience while out sight-seeing. Never again did she venture within 100 yards of a public restroom.
I am assuming that Beijing authorities (for research purposes) did not check out bathrooms at rest stops on the U.S. Interstate System on a holiday weekend, or those of a fast-food joint after the bars close. They might have thought: “Hey, ours aren’t so bad.”
