To Canucks everywhere – Happy Canada Day

Read Time:1 Minute, 25 Second

July 1 is a big day for Canadians. It is the anniversary of the enactment of the British North America Act, 1867 (today called the Constitution Act, 1867, in Canada), which united three colonies into a single country called Canada. Originally called Dominion Day (French: Le Jour de la Confédération), the name was changed in 1982, the year the Canada Act was passed. Canada Day observances take place throughout Canada as well as by Canadians internationally.

Outside of Canada, the biggest celebration of Canada Day is in London, England. British authorities allow Canadians to take over Trafalgar Square and the Canadian community in London have a big party.

In 2011, the event attracted a record crowd of 80,000 making it the largest Canada Day celebration outside of Canada’s borders. The event garnered media coverage in the United Kingdom and coast to coast coverage in Canada from the CBC, CTV, Global National and other news and media agencies. Many key events such as the Trafalgar Cup street hockey tournament and the Canada on Stage concert have become fixtures at Canada Day in London as well as in the city’s summer event calendar.

I know a number of Canucks and they don’t seem to have an appreciation for their beautiful country, then again many Americans share this questionable attribute.
