A set of billboards released Monday by an atheist organization slams the faiths of both major-party presidential candidates as part of a campaign aimed at the upcoming Democratic National Convention.

According to CNN, The ads by American Atheists went up around the convention’s host city, Charlotte, North Carolina, and will stay through Sept. 6, at a reported cost of $15,000.

The billboards are bi-partisan in their criticism, saying Christianity “Promotes hate, calls it ‘love,’” and describing it as “Sadistic God; Useless Savior” and “30,000 Versions of ‘Truth’.” President Barack Obama is a Protestant, while Vice-President Joe Biden and Republican VP candidate Paul Ryan are Catholics.

After reading the comments I still believe that the “Christian moderates” are the ones who keep the fundies going ! Would a moderate Christian take the side of an atheist’s non-beliefs over the extreme beliefs of the fundamentalist, right-wing Christians who believe most of the same things they do? After all whether you’re a moderate or an extremist your beliefs are still based on the Bible! JUST ASKING FOR OPINIONS !

Not all Christians are hateful, any more than all Muslims are hateful. Lumping all people of a faith in with the crazies does a great disservice to the folks who are actually trying to promote peace and equality. People like the Nuns on the Bus and the 3 protesters who were arrested in Oak Ridge, TN. If atheists want to live in a country where the powers that be don’t believe they should all either be killed or deported, they better get their heads together and realize the RIGHT WING is the group that hates them, not the left.

Good point. This agnostic is voting for President Obama, because the thought of a theocracy scares the living crap out of me.

Erin, no one knows that better than I. My son and his family are devout Christians and are very good people. They do their best to walk the walk as well as talk the talk and would never be associated with the drivel of the right wing drivel. The same goes for my daughter and many other people I know. Even though I also criticize Christians as a group my targets are right wing nuts who think they are somehow better than everyone else and were given the right to speak for everyone else.

Great. Atheists can vote for someone other than Obama and help the kooky ticket of Romney/Ryan who sealed up thier kook and extreminst bloc with Ryan’s name added to the republican ticket.

That’ll be good for the atheist cause. A president in magic underwear and a misogynist kook one heartbeat away.

Mike, I think what Joe was referring to was any atheist vote taken away from Obama is one less that will go against Romney. When these third, fourth, and fifth party folks get involved in a close race in a state like Florida, for example, (a la Gore v Bush) the Republicans are the one that benefit.

At this point in time the atheists may well want to pick a side. I understand their desire to proclaim their non belief but this next election is a pretty big deal. All of the gains that various groups have made under the Democrats could well be set back if the Republicans get in office. In the next term there may be as many as two Supreme Court nominees which could change a lot of things in this country with the fanatics in office.

Atheists are gaining strength in America and they are our last hope. If the Right has its way the government would be ruled by Pat Robertson and his crowd of crazies.
