Clint Eastwood: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of His RNC Speech (video)
I liked Clint Eastwood as Rowdy Yates in Rawhide, and as the Man with No Name in several spaghetti westerns. He was Blondie in the The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, a legendary movie with a memorable soundtrack. Last night however, at the Republican National Convention, he was the Man with No Script as he rambled, mumbled and talked to an empty chair. Here’s the video of his embarrassing speech:

It was like watching the therapy I did when I was a teenager, talking to an empty chair that had my bio parents in it, to let them know how much I disliked them. He managed to do the same thing with a bunch of republicans. What I mean by that is, see here GoOpers this phantom Prez Obama you all have created, he does not exist, he’s in your fevered imaginations. My one little take on it anyway. I know there is a name for that kind of therapy, but it escapes me right at this moment. I have loved Clint Eastwood for forever and I don’t see that fangirl crush going away anytime soon because of this.
I had watched that several times now and to be quite honest I found it entertaining. Eastwood has always been a conservative but not necessarily a wacko conservative. I watched it in the context of a one man show on a stage in front of an audience. He was able to convey a few points that were not untrue about “promises unkept”, he just didn’t mention fighting a do nothing congress. There were definitely some humor about telling Romney what to do to to himself that wasn’t possible. I agree with Bob Keller that the lines about government being owned by the people and politicians working for the people being a really important line for all politicians to heed this year.
What a difference a day makes… Clint Eastwood’s “performance art” was cringe-worthy on Thursday night. The consensus was he embarrassed himself. A beloved actor had become a dottering old fool. Romney insiders were privately apologizing and lamenting he had ruined Mitt Romney’s night.
Twenty-four (now thirty-six) hours later it’s generally conceded by both sides he was the hit of the evening. The “empty chair” meme has dominated Twitter for the last day and a half, becoming so powerful that Dems and Liberals have been forced to adopt it for their descriptions of Romney.
I daresay 95% of Republican Twitterati were apologizing for Eastwood on Twitter Thursday night and now 100% are praising him Saturday morning. His “The Government belongs to us. Politicians work for us.” line is instantly the most important line that will be uttered at either convention.
I’m not defending or endorsing Eastwood, I’m merely expressing my absolute astonishment that people (lots and lots of people, left as well as right) could do a unified 180 degree change of opinion in such a short period of time.
He was Mayor of Carmel, California at one time, Remember?
Well, I guess Crazy Uncle Harry doesn’t understand how government works either. Congress? Pfft, blame everything on the black guy. On an up note, kudos to Eastwood for going public with his “empty chair” therapy. Asshole.
LOL Erin. He did try, and he was a lot nicer than a lot of those “assholes.” I do have to give him that 🙂
