Dee Snider to Paul Ryan: We’re Not Gonna Take It

Sometimes, I attempt things that are way above my “pay grade.” Last October, I decided to ask three of the most popular and gifted authors in America to send autographed books to my friend, Major (he got promoted!) Steve Snyder-Hill. To my amazement, Lincoln Child, Douglas Preston and Stephen King said “yes,” and Steve is now the proud owner of autographed copies of Gideon’s Sword and The Shining.

Last week, I read that Dee Snider, the lead singer of Twisted Sister, had told Paul Ryan to stop using Twisted Sister’s anthem, “We’re Not Gonna Take It” in any of Ryan’s campaigning. Another light bulb went off over my head. What if I emailed Dee Snider and asked permission to use “We’re Not Gonna Take It” as the official song for We Are Legitimate? I spent half an hour composing the email, crossed my fingers and sent it.

This morning, I received a response from Sandra Jackson, Dee Snider’s London representative. Mr. Snider said yes. This moment is about more than a song. It’s about power. Dee Snider told the man who is telling survivors and victims of sexual assault “no” NO, and he told a group of survivors YES. And that’s amazing. Mr. Snider didn’t have to do that. He could have just told us we had to buy the copyright, or go through legal hoops, but he didn’t. He just said yes.

So, I am thrilled and so excited to share with you the official song for We Are Legitimate, “We’re Not Gonna Take It,” performed and written by Twisted Sister. You may or may not be fans of the band, but you have to admit, Dee Snider is a rock star, not just an actual rock star, but in every sense of that phrase. Thank you, Dee Snider and Sandra Jackson, for helping survivors get back some power today, and thank you for your generosity and kindness.

Many thanks to Dee Snider of Twisted Sister for permission to use this clip for a most worthy cause and may the light of the world always shine upon you.  Peace…..

I remember when Bill Gates approached Mick Jagger about using a tune from the Rolling Stones to introduce Windows 95 (“Start Me Up”). The Story goes Mick was not about to sell ANY of the Stones music to use in commercials. Bill was persistent and kept after him. Finally, to get rid of Bill, Mick said “Give me $7,000,000 and it’s yours.” Bill pulled out his check book and asked, “Will you take a check”? I am sure the Rmoney campaign could of done the same thing and Dee would still of refused.

Erin,You have a real issue;
You didn’t just go out and play something that you personally thought was good;
You did the right thing and asked permission, which D Snyder graciously granted (and I agree, it’s highly appropriate).
Kudos to both of you!
