Kids steal mom’s BMW, drive across country

Read Time:1 Minute, 19 Second

(AP) Two 13-year-old Ohio boys who stole a mother’s car and drove it 669 miles to Kansas City, Mo., were found sleeping in a downtown alley, police said.

The runaways from the Columbus area apparently gave their location away when one posted on Facebook that they were stuck in Kansas City without any gas, adds the Columbus Dispatch; seems mother Catherine Johnson had by that point cut off a credit card son Cole had swiped along with the keys. The boys were taken into custody yesterday by officers investigating a suspicious vehicle that matched the description of Johnson’s BMW. “They were fine, fortunately,” said a police spokesman. “I think there are definitely a whole lot of things that could have gone wrong for them, and having the police find them probably would be one of the better outcomes.”

Johnson said Cole had wanted to go to California to skateboard. “How it went on for two days and no one noticed boggles my mind,” Johnson said yesterday by phone from Chicago as she waited for a flight to Kansas City to retrieve the boys. Johnson said authorities told her the boys would not be charged, and the car was towed. She has submitted a complaint over how Columbus police initially handled the case because she believes they took hours too long to alert other authorities.

Have to admit to having done this myself, the joyride after the ‘rents went to sleep and I had just got my license. When I got back, I was grounded for almost a month and for another 3 months I had to clean, inside and out, dad’s car on a Saturday so I couldn’t go to the mall. That was torture for a 16 yr old girl.

BMW – THE ULTIMATE DRIVING EXPERIENCE

“B’mer” people love to drive their their cars. What can I say.

I bought a brand new BMW convertible in 2001. I had more trouble with it than I did my Ford F150 with which I had ZERO trouble. As a matter of fact, looking back, I had more trouble with that BMW than any new car I have ever bought. Never again…

In my experience people such as this cast about for anyone but themselves or their family, friends, to blame and inevitably it falls upon the police. The police did it, made it happen, entrapped (having not the slightest idea of what that really means) my son/daughter…and etc. I’ve heard it time and again over a long, long career in cops. It’s a failure to take or accept responsibility. If I had a nickel for every time I heard some well meaning person say: she couldn’t possibly have done such a thing. She’s too sweet, or she used to visit me, and on and on I would be a wealthy man. The fact is we can all develop and nurture different personas for different circumstances and not all of us are who we seem.

Oh no, I did it. Most of the really stupid things my friends and I did as kids were 100% our fault, our ideas and oh boy did we get in trouble. I think I’m still grounded for something or other.

Drove my grandfather’s Ford LTD into a tree while the entire family was at dinner when I was 14. Kids are stupid.

Hahahahahaha! Great story. I used to steal my old man’s car from time to time, but I never drove it 600 odd miles! I drove it around the neighborhood, ’till one of the neighbors called him and told him. The difference? He beat me like a rented mule!

I’ll never forget watching him as he’d stare at the thing in the driveway, and think – how could I have parked it like that? Only and idiot would park it like that.

I don’t really get why the kids aren’t being charged with anything. I’m not one of those “throw away the key” types, but I do think they should at least face some community service time, or something.

I also question the judgement of this woman, who blames the cops for her failure as a parent.

If mom is charging the police for taking too long to start the search or alert other authorities, I understand why the boys are the way they are! Read between the lines – kids are usually the way they are because of parents.

I agree. We are all of us a product of our learning.

So true. I was thinking the same thing that Rick wrote about from “between the lines”. But, bless her heart (a southern term of non-endearment)…she just has to blame the police or else have to deal with the guilt of poor parenting…for the first time in her life.
