Missouri Republican Todd Akin on Illegitimate Rape
Todd Akin, a blustering asshole from Missouri running for senate, made a statement so vile, so hateful and so wrong that my jaw hit my knees. Todd went on television and, well, the video is below.
This whole legitimate versus illegitimate rape question has been winging around the right wing for some time. Even herbal tea baggers’s most favoritest candidate in the whole fucking world, Ron Paul, mentioned illegitimate rape, since obviously TONS of women lie about being raped just so they can get an abortion, and we need to curtail that by making women prove they have really been raped. You know, women would have bruises and broken bones and their uterus would be hanging out and a few missing teeth. That’s “real rape.”
Hey, GOP? I’ve been raped. For my first rape, I was given what turned out to be spiked apple juice by a boyfriend at the ripe old age of 16. I don’t talk about that. My second rape would qualify as “legitimate” because I had five finger shaped bruises on my neck, where my rapist choked me against my own car. Women are raped every day in America, and some of them get pregnant. Todd Akin, and the rest of the bassackwards GOP want to force those women to carry to term. Why? The minute that woman pops out her constant reminder, you will abandon her and her baby faster than Mitt Romney can hide a tax return. And don’t a lot of members of the new GOP question rape to begin with? What were you wearing, did you drink, were you REALLY raped, is this a legitimate attack, or are you just trying to get back at your boyfriend/husband/random stranger in a ski mask who punched you in the face repeatedly and held a gun to your head?
Watch Todd Akin’s amazing performance, and you tell me there’s no war on women. You tell me conservatives give a rat’s ass about rape victims, or abused women at all. Go ahead. They don’t care at all.

“If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.” Is there some medical phenomenon that I’m not aware of, whereby the ovary swiftly recalls a released egg to prevent the risk of rape-induced pregnancy?
As repugnant as I find this guy’s distinction between legitimate and presumably “illegitimate” rape, I find the implications of the latter part of his statement more striking–that women who are impregnated by rape have either not really been raped, or they are somehow culpable for their own pregnancy by allowing their magical egg-recall defense system to falter. This guy’s a real genius.
You noticed that, too? They have no clue how anything works-not birth control, not conception, nothing. And yet, they want to tell US what to do with all the stuff they don’t understand.
Akin’s “degree” is a Master of “Divinity” — that is, his higher education was in religious crankery rather than an actual subject. Might explain why he can’t think straight and is totally ignorant of biology.
He belongs to a party which treats creationism and global-warming denialism as legitimate viewpoints. Ignorance, gut feeling, and political convenience trump reality. It’s all of a piece.
Nope, let the voters decide. Republicans are horrified that he made this statement (out loud) and now people are starting to figure out that Akin and Paul Ryan worked on a bill together, trying to change the legal definition of rape to “forcible” rape, meaning you have to look like you were driven over by a tank in order to prove you were raped. It failed, thank goodness, but there’s our VP nominee. I’ll just keep digging and banging my head on my desk.
Comment from Canada,
Dear God!!! Please remove that guy out of office immediately!
I just read that Scott Brown has asked for this clown to withdraw. Even Romney condemned him. What an asshole this guys is…
