Conservative Hypocrisy Meets Pizza

Image of Scott Van Duzer hugging President Obama from Daily Kos

Remember the Chick-Fil-A love fest? Thousands upon thousands of predominantly white, conservative, Christian Fox viewers swarmed Chick-Fil-A restaurants all over America to show support for the Cathy family’s homophobia. They were told it was to support the Cathy family’s First Amendment rights, but since no one except a few pissed off mayors were attacking that specific right, it was really just a big “thanks!” to Chick-Fil-A for supporting anti-LGBT groups like the Family Research Council.

Well, now those same conservatives who devoured sodium, cholesterol and an ingredient found in breast implants to protect the Cathy’s First Amendment rights are demanding a boycott of Big Apple Pizza in Fort Pierce, Florida. The problem? No, owner Scott Van Duzer is not gay, nor does Big Apple Pizza have LGBT Eat Free Thursday. He’s not a socialist, Marxist, fascist, communist, Wiccan lesbian. Nope, all Scott did was give President Obama a huge bear hug.

President Obama heard about a blood drive being held by Van Duzer and stopped in to Big Apple Pizza to say howdy. Van Duzer a registered Republican, was so thrilled that he picked President Obama up and gave him a big ol’ squeeze. It was adorable, it was incredibly funny and I am so glad the Secret Service did not tackle Scott to the ground. You got that Van Duzer is a Republican, right? And therein lies the problem.

Republicans are supposed to be as insane as the far right that have taken over their party. What Van Duzer should have done, I guess, is throw pizza sauce at President Obama and tell him to go to hell. Unfortunately for the GOP, Van Duzer is sane, intelligent and more patriotic than most of them.

According to an article at NPR.org, a website called Yelp is being inundated with reviews for Big Apple Pizza. Conservatives, outraged that Scott Van Duzer is not a real Republican, are trying to lower Big Apple Pizza’s rating.  As Rick B. puts it so eloquently in his 1-star review of Big Apple Pizza, “If you were a real republican you would have body slammed the socialist President Obama.” The opposite is happening. The good reviews are far outweighing the bad, and Big Apple Pizza’s Facebook page is filled with glowing accolades, messages of support and people (including me) asking if Big Apple Pizza ships out of state.

But this all begs the question-why is it such a problem for conservatives, who supposedly love the Cathy family’s First Amendment rights, that Scott Van Duzer hugged the president rather than “body slam him?” Doesn’t the First Amendment cover everyone? It’s supposed to, but if you’ve been paying attention, it actually only works for the right wing. In their eyes, anyway.

When Ed Schultz called Laura Ingraham a slut, he was suspended and had to make a formal apology on the air. When Rush Limbaugh called Sandra Fluke not only a slut but a prostitute, he never apologized and, in fact, Mitt Romney supports Rush’s right to call a law student a whore. When Glenn Beck called a sitting United States senator a prostitute, nothing happened. Ted Nugent can threaten President Obama, and he’s still killing Bambi and playing horrible music. But a small business owner hugs the president, and OH MY GOD, it’s the flipping apocalypse.

There are very few sane Republicans left, as this latest fiasco proves. Liberals were evil traitors for boycotting Chick-Fil-A, even though we were (and most still are) boycotting the company for its donations to hate groups, not what the Cathy family said. Conservatives are flaming, brazen hypocrites. Sorry, but they prove over and over again that old adage “Do as I say, not as I do.” You cannot have it both ways. You cannot tell me I am a horrible person for boycotting a company that gave money to an organization that supports the “Kill The Gays bill” in Uganda, then turn around and boycott a pizza joint because the owner hugged the president.

I am glad that Scott Van Duzer is a sane Republican. I laughed with glee when I saw that photo. Van Duzer just looks so happy, and why shouldn’t he? He’s hugging a man who wants to help him, he’s hugging a man who respects him and who wants to be everyone’s president, not just the few, the rich and the conservative. And I am even happier that Scott Van Duzer plans to vote for President Obama in November.

If you live out of state, give Big Apple Pizza a call, order a pie and have it delivered to a Fort Pierce homeless shelter, firehouse or police station. Here’s the info:

Joe Blow (maybe i’m not around here often enough to know if he’s a regular or just an anonymous poster) was correct in pointing out the false equivalencies of the two events.

But that’s not my point. My point is that boycotts are cool. All boycotts are cool. There is no such thing as a bad boycott. And ABSOLUTELY NO ONE IS A HYPOCRITE.

If I get bad service from a store, I don’t go back. If I disagree with a politician’s position, I withhold my vote. If I felt strong opposition to the Chick-fil-A’s political views or their contributions to a certain organization, I’ll not go to their establishment.

I believe I’ve applauded your stand in not supporting Chick-fil-A in an earlier post.

My point is that you have absolutely no point in this post. At best you set yourself up as the hypocrite.

You feel strongly the Cathy family supports a group that is horribly wrong. Those boycotting the pizzeria feel Scott Van Duzer supported a man who is horribly wrong. You disagree with them, of course. But their feelings are still both real and valid. A boycott is entirely appropriate.

Supports can do what the supporters of Chick-fil-A did = support the establishment!

Really? Are you going to neglect to give the whole story about how the mayors of Boston and Chicago threatened to ban Chik-Fil-A from those cities. Thats what sparked the whole thing. Exercising free speech and voting with your dollars is not the same as government over reach. Yes you need to use the word ban for the full story to be told, not just a couple mayors attacked their rights, two mayors of a couple of the largest cities in the country. You are minimizing that to promote your message.

Erin, we are all still hopeful that there are a lot of sane Republicans like Scott around. I guess they are keeping their heads down for obvious reasons.
