Will The Real Mitt Romney Please Stand Up

Read Time:4 Minute, 40 Second

Do any of you remember the game show on television called “What’s My Line?” It was really popular in the 1950’s and into the 1960’s. The host was John Daly and the panelists were Dorothy Killgallen, Bennett Cerf, and Arlene Francis and the premise was that a guest would come on the show and answer questions with clues about who he or she really was. Well, apparently Mitt Romney was a fan of that show because that is how he is running for president except with an additional twist, almost always a conflicting one.

During the Republican primaries, which now seem like a decade ago, Mitt was on a tear to totally repeal Obamacare which was also known as Romneycare because Obama used his model from Massachusetts for the new healthcare program. Now in 2007 and 2008 old Mitt touted the Massachusetts model as good for the country and he also criticize the problem of people without insurance going to emergency rooms for free medical care. Then on “Sixty Minutes” Sunday night he says we don’t need universal health care because we have a safety net for people without insurance because they can always go to the emergency room. C’mon Mitt, which is it going to be. You gonna provide insurance to everyone so they have to be responsible for themselves, or are you just going to leave it like it is and let people continue to use the emergency room for their medical care at the expense of everyone else? You know that the ER does cost three – five times more than going to a regular doctor, right?

Well, he said he would let us know after he is elected. Yeah, right. Wink, Wink, I trust you on that one Mitt. And WOW! Did he put Paul Ryan in his place. You can tell that they are really coordinating their campaign. When asked about Medicare and Social Security he said it would definitely be there for those on Medicare on those close to being on Medicare. In the future, how for in the future he didn’t say, people would have the option of medicare or private insurance. But, when questioned about Paul Ryan’s plan to end Medicare he said, “Well he has his plan and I have my plan and I am going to be the President, he isn’t.” Big grin on his face that seems to say. “I can fire him can’t I?”. Well, actually no, you can’t Mitt.

When ask about his tax proposals that he would enact the only thing that was clear was that the upper income group was going to get the best break even though he tried to dance around it. He said he is going to keep the same tax structure but he is going to lower each bracket by 20%, but he was going to take away some of the deductions, especially from the wealthiest Americans. When asked about those deductions he would only say that he would have to get together with congress and discuss it. Really? We are supposed to trust that you and the congress that has blocked every move that would have helped middle income workers are going to help out the middle income folks. And what was that about cutting the taxes on capital gains and savings?

The middle income folks in this country are barely surviving much less having a bunch of money in investments and savings. That’s the rich folks you are talking to there Mitt old boy. The working people need jobs, as fast as possible. By the way, what are you going to pay for these tax cuts with, not to mention the proposed increases in defense spending? OH Yesss, I forgot, the cuts in Social Security and Medicare. But, but, you just said,…. oh hell. Never mind.

Mitt also has this wonderful relationship with his campaign people. He said his campaign is going fine and he has a good campaign staff. “I may not speak so eloquently sometimes, but my campaign staff is a good one.” Great Mitt, you continue to screw up and other people have to bail you out. If you become president and you piss off Russia it will be our troops that will have to bail you out. When you are the leader of the free world you have to be sure about what you say and try not to keep the world pissed off at us all the time. You can’t continually send your wife out to tell every one to “Stop it.” when other world leaders are talking bad about you. I’m telling you it won’t work. Tell her to stomp her foot next time, that may help some.

Finally, Mitt, will you please, for God’s sake learn how to walk like a man instead of an uptight, nerdy little boy. Relax and walk with some confidence. Let your arms swing from the shoulders so we know you actually are from the primate, humanoid species and not some android. If you were on Whats My Line the show it would have to be three seasons long because of the conflicts in the clues and doubts that you are truly human and not several different robots running around the country with a different program in each. So now that we are catching on to the secret, Will The Real Mitt Romney Please Come Out of Hiding?

Politicians see mirrors, or rather they craft them from their own devices, thus when you see a politician imagine a hall of mirrors, carnival mirrors, that simultaneously show you fat, thin, small and tall. The same person but different presentations, a la Mitt Romney et al.

Very well put Danny.

Thanks for your posting. I also believe laptop computers are becoming more and more popular today, and now in many cases are the only form of computer found in a household. This is due to the fact that at the same time that they are becoming more and more affordable, their processing power keeps growing to the point where these are as robust as personal computers from just a few in years past.

Thanks visiting here. When I first started teaching at the university level there were no personal computers. per se. If you were connect to the mainframe you could do a few things. Then came the desk top and have always had one and still do but you are probably correct since I also own a laptop. I guess I am old fashioned but I always back my laptop up to my desk top which is then backed up to a separate hard drive and to an online back up. I am sure this overkill but I still consider lap tops to be temporary storage.

His campaign staff consists of rejects like John Bolton and Sununu. Dude wants to bring a new and not improved PNAC to the country, like that worked. Everything with this guy is elect me and you’ll see me throw magic fairy dust over all, trust me everything will right itself. Yeah, let’s see, how did that work out for old walnuts in 08, when he said he had plans to catch Bin Laden but couldn’t tell us till after he was elected. What’s that you say, he isn’t president. Yup, Robme, you will not be getting that title either.

Hiding behind his wife’s skirt is really unbecoming also. Her with her you people, latinos need to get over their biases towards republicans, like we are a bunch of children that need to be told what to do. she is another one I wouldn’t want to be first lady. She is worse than Babs Bush and that is me misunderestimating her as commander cuckoo bananas was fond of saying.

Jess, I thought that the “Stop it” bit was a little like momma protecting her little boy.

Oh don’t even get me started on that one Bill. Now they have pulled her off doing interviews.. Didn’t he just say at his super secret fundraiser, that they would use her sparingly so people wouldn’t get sick of her or something like that. Too late I am afraid. We got sick of her the first time she opened up her entitled pie hole. The hamlet where I live, I have a name for women like Ann Robme, who as it so happens, did a fund raising thing here not too long ago. She is one of those ladies who lunch from the country club set. A friend of a friend invited me to go to it, think it was something like 3500 per plate, when I laughed in her face I thought she would have a stroke. You are the demographic that should be supporting Romney Jess, you know that, I was told. Yeah maybe, but I also have a heart and want what is best for everyone, not just my husband and me and people like us. They. just. do. not. get. it.

“Mitt, will you please, for God’s sake learn how to walk like a man.” Amen! Great post Bill.

Romney reminds me of past bosses I’ve had, who have provided erratic and ineffective leadership not because they were bad people but because they were so fearful and insecure that their only working principle was that of trying to preserve their own hides.

Romney strikes me as “that guy.” Here’s this smart, presumably moderate, family man, successful in life, who is so busy chasing his tail to be all things to all people that his words have stopped making sense. He’s stuck defending statements that I don’t even think HE believes are defensible in order to “look strong.” He turns on his own (Ryan) in order to try to “look like a leader.” The sad thing is that he could say just about anything at this point without losing the vote on the far right, and if he stood true to any principle other than “anything for the election” he’d actually be a much MORE attractive choice to swing voters. There is such a thing as trying too hard.

When you start letting others tell you how to “lead,” you lose all sense of leadership…

lol G.L. There is something about the way he walks that makes him look weird. His arms don’t swing from the shoulders and he seems to take weird steps from the knees down. Its almost like he is always trying to sneak up on something.

I see Romney’s “change of heart or mind” on politics and more importantly a lack of courage in politics. This man had a ton of money but as they say money doesn’t buy happiness. It is now power, greater power than he has ever enjoyed, that he seeks, and he cares nothing about the morality of his positions or lack thereof.

He has plenty of money and he says he is happy being rich. The only thing left is whether he can but the Presidency.

I suppose a politician from either party would have a hard time with “Would the Real………..Please Stand Up”. A true politician must be a chameleon and that learned behavior takes away any last ounce of authenticity. So, I doubt Mitt, or others for that matter, really do know who they are out of the context of their political affiliations, or even in that context as it appears lately.
Thanks for a good post.

I think that politicians should learn to be who they really are and we, the public, need to understand that they cannot be perfect all the time. As I have been told by my friends I would never get a vote if I ran for anything because I tend to say things in private that I probably would never do but frustration makes me say them anyway.

I guess I couldn’t run for office either 🙂 And would not want to anyway. Nor would you, I’m guessing.

I’m not sure that politicians need to be chameleons, they just have to know how to “spin.” But it’s kind of like a top…to keep spinning gracefully, you have to have a solid center. Otherwise you spin out. Romney being the case in point. 🙂

Your headline is from To Tell The Truth, where Willard would never be picked as the truth-teller.

Of course, What’s My Line would be a good title for the upcoming debates, although it might open up grounds for an infringement lawsuit from Goodson-Todman Productions.

I wonder where politics are going to go as technology makes every word they utter available to the public and the other side. I wonder if the voters could ever get adjusted to always hearing the absolute truth all the time.
