America’s Love Affair With Guns Claims Young Victim

Read Time:2 Minute, 51 Second

Americans love their guns, and the politicians love that they do, voting time and again against gun control laws and even failing to renew bans on assault weapons, designed for one purpose, to kill people.  Controlled by powerful lobbies such as the NRA, our duly elected representatives are terrified of making enemies of the millions of citizens who cling to their guns and bibles.

The reality of it is guns in the hands of folks who aren’t trained in their use kill people.  They’re easy to reach, and easy to use.  Another nice advantage: you don’t have to get your hands dirty.  Just point and shoot, much like a Kodak camera.

According to BBC News a teacher who mistakenly shot dead his 15-year-old adopted son has said through a lawyer that his family is “broken in half”.

Jeffrey Giuliano opened fire on a masked prowler at his sister’s house next door in the Connecticut town of New Fairfield last week.

Police later told him he had killed his adopted son Tyler.

Lawyer Gene Zingaro said Mr Giuliano’s family has “literally hundreds of questions as to what Tyler was doing”.

“Those questions will probably go unanswered forever,” Mr Zingaro said.

State police said Mr Giuliano was called by his sister at around 01:00 on Thursday (05:00 GMT) when she heard a noise outside her house and believed someone was trying to break in.

Armed with a gun, Mr Giuliano confronted a knife-wielding prowler wearing a black balaclava and black clothing.

The science teacher opened fire when the person lunged at him with the weapon.

State police say they are continuing to investigate the shooting and no charges have been filed.

There is more to defending oneself than just pointing and shooting.  As a career law enforcement officer and firearms instructor I can attest to the many mistakes and misses of career officers much less untrained civilians.

The fact is, missing, even at a distance of six feet, is not uncommon given the rush of emotion and environmental conditions at the time of the conflict.  It is important to know when to actually pull the trigger as well.  Officers are trained NOT to shoot at knife carrying suspects unless the threat is clear.  Simply holding a knife and approaching in a threatening manner does not necessarily equal deadly force, unless the suspect appears to be readying to throw the knife or retreat is not possible.

The danger in allowing untrained citizens to carry guns is reflected in this terrible tragedy, and such cases are more commonplace than you would think.  Several years ago a man came home from work and opened up his closet door to hang up his coat.  His teenage daughter was hiding inside so as to playfully scare him.  Dad, carrying his trusty .357 magnum, startled, pulled his gun and shot her dead.  This is lack of training.

Both of these parents and the dozens others who have caused such tragedies, have paid the price, and until our politicians grow some balls and throw the NRA out of government similar things will happen and innocent people will die, all in the name of a self-serving interpretation of the Second Amendment.

Why is it that none of the constitutional “originalists” interpret “arms” to be the definition of “arms” in 1776? My own interpretation? I think that all Americans have the right to own a muzzleloading rifle that takes, what, 2 min. to fire? From everything that I have heard, more people killed or hurt themselves or loved ones than manage to use their weapons to protect themselves in violent situations!! And the arguments that “if you take away our guns, gun violence and murder will go way up, and foreigners won’t be scared to attack us” is poppycock! Which nation CURRENTLY has the highest crime? Which nation has the most murders committed by gun? When was the last time that you or anyone you knew said “Hey, guns are illegal in Switzerland. Therefore, since no one has a gun, we should go attack the Swiss!”?

Mike I can’t tell you how great it is to see you writing again. While I appreciate your many authors, especially you Bill, I missed your particular brand of commentary. Keep it up. You are Mad Mike’s America. You and loyal friends like Bill. I remember you guys from the blogspot days but I doubt you remember me 🙂

Mike, like you, I know many horror stories related to guns in the hands of untrained people during my timed as a police officer and as one who has who closely with law enforcement for many years. I also know my share of stories of even trained officers who mishandled their weapons both on and off duty. I remember an officer whom I worked with whose son came home unexpectedly from college late one Friday night. While the Young man was standing on the back porch searching for his house keys in his pocket his father shot him dead through the back door. The son was deaf and could not hear the father demanding to know who was there.
There are also many people who believe they are trained to use a gun, and on a shooting range they may well be, but in a crisis situation things are less clear and happen so fast that the typical person cannot be prepared. Hell, most police officers are really prepared for their first encounters. I remember “back in the day” they used various formats of the “Shoot/Don’t Shoot” to train recruits on when to fire their weapons. Sometimes the outcomes of those were scary.
