On Mitt Romney: I Am Not Afraid

Read Time:5 Minute, 19 Second

This was my Facebook status Monday morning:

I’m seeing a few friends freaking out about the election. Listen, guys, I know it’s scary. There are so many factors at play-a voting machine company partially owned by Tagg Romney, the lies, the racism and the money. I really get it. But look at the facts. Mitt Romney, just like Bush, said Bin Laden wasn’t important. Romney went to England and manged to piss off almost all of our allies. Romney has stated that Russia is still our greatest enemy, and has been called out twice by Chinese media for his crazy anti-China comments while making millions of dollars outsourcing to China. Finally, Romney is against things today that he supported as recently as 15 minutes ago. He is not presidential, he is dishonest and he is smarmy.

Am I worried? Yes, because there are a lot of right wingers in this country who would vote for a ferret, as long as it was white. But you know what I’m doing this morning? Wiping off the left rear side window of my car and slapping my Obama/Biden sticker on. Even here, in this conservative, hard core Christian little town, Obama/Biden signs and stickers are beginning to show up on lawns and cars. We can do this, because if folks in this town are voting for the right guys, that means folks in towns just like this all over America are doing the same.

The average age of a member of the Tea Party is 60-ish. They remember Cold War Reagan, and they worship him. They cling to the notion that America always has to have a bad guy to fight, to bomb, to convert. They love Mitt Romney because Mitt Romney not only worships Cold War Reagan, he wants to go back to the policies of that era. Let’s take a look at some of those policies.

1) Supporting the Contras. Ronald Reagan loved any group with “freedom” in their name, even a murderous band of thugs like the Nicaraguan Contras. Oh, you think they were fantastic rebels whose only interest was saving their country? Then why did the Reagan administration engage in “white propaganda” in order to change public perception of his pet freedom fighters? Human rights organizations, including Human Rights Watch and the Catholic Institute for International Relations, published reports detailing the atrocities committed by the Contras. Human Rights Watch wrote “[The] contras were major and systematic violators of the most basic standards of the laws of armed conflict, including by launching indiscriminate attacks on civilians, selectively murdering non-combatants, and mistreating prisoners.” CIIR, in their report found that “The record of the contras in the field, as opposed to their official professions of democratic faith, is one of consistent and bloody abuse of human rights, of murder, torture, mutilation, rape, arson, destruction and kidnapping.

2) The Iran-Contra Affair. Yes, I know, selling arms to Iran right after they held American hostages for 444 days in response to our meddling in their politics for oil seems a bit strange, but as usual, the Reagan administration loved those darn freedom fighters! The Boland Amendment prohibited further funding of the Contras legally, so top Reagan advisers decided to go under the radar. As anyone familiar with government knows, that sort of thing only works for so long, and they all got caught. See Oliver North, right wing American hero and noted paper shredder.

3) The Mujahideen. Again with the freedom fighters. These were Afghan freedom fighters who were funded and trained by the CIA to help the U.S. get the Russians out of Afghanistan. Reagan himself hosted a group of Mujahideen in the White House. The current right wing throws an embolism when Common appears at the White House, but they were perfectly fine with Reagan laughing it up with the future Taliban. How did the Mujahideen become the Taliban? Long story short: we used them to toss the Russians out, left their country looking like the surface of the moon, then abandoned them. Read Charlie Wilson’s War.

And now we have millions of 60-ish year old former Republicans…let me explain that. I truly believe the Republican party is dead, replaced by the fringe, the far right and religious zealots. Okay, back to these Tea Partiers. All that stuff I wrote above? Matters not a whit to them. They see the world in the same narrow way that Reagan and his cronies did. Don’t have democracy? Let us shove it down your throat. You have oil we want? Enjoy this invasion. You worship a different god or practice a religion that scares us? Let’s shoot you with guns on which have been inscribed bible verses.

That’s Mitt Romney. If you want another holy war, if you want future terrorists in the White House, if you want America to have MORE enemies, not less, then you should vote for Mitt Romney. If you believe that life begins before a woman even has sex, if you believe that gay people are less than human, if you believe David Barton history and if you believe that an employer should have the right to discriminate against a woman because she’s on the Pill, vote for Mitt Romney. If you have no need for facts, facts like 15 people gathered at the Caucus on the eve of President Obama’s inauguration, plotting the destruction of his presidency, vote for Mitt Romney. If you find all your news on Fox and worship a white Jesus who hates the poor almost as much as you do, vote for Mitt Romney.

Oh, and if you do vote for Mitt Romney, remember one thing. We’ve been down this path before, and it’s a horrible one. I understand that the new GOP consistently and energetically votes against their own best interests time and time again, and probably will in this election. If you do, if you cast a vote for war and pain and bigotry and racism and a theocracy, I have one thing to say to you. Argo eff yourself.

Thanks to Wikipedia, Charlie Wilson’s War and my dad for raising me to question everything.

@James Smith, I don’t agree. I did not get the feeling that Erin was saying that all people over 60 are tea partiers. Yes, I am terrified. The reason that I am terrified has mor WHAT the Republicans claim to be voting for men the fact that all people over 60 fallen that awful group. My father, who IS over 60, and my baby brother, who is not yet 50 both fall in that group. To say that I do not agree with them is a vast understatement…

I am not sure I found any meaning in your post. DO you not agree with the Republicans or your father and brother?

Apparently, you were also unable to comprehend my post. I even clarified it when I said that, “Maybe that’s not what you wanted to say, but that’s the impression you gave.” AS with your own post, badly worded statements can leave even those friendly to your position in confusion as to your meaning.

FWIW, I am in disagreement with the Republicans on nearly every issue. Perhaps if they said something verifiable such as the sun appears in the east, I could agree with that. When I hear blatant lies such as Romney and Ryan have told, I cannot grant them much credibility on anything except they want to run (or ruin) the country faster than the Democrats/\\\.

I am sorry, I tried to post more with an edit, that myDOdditional post was totally lost. I DO NONOTagree with Romney or his team or the Republicans in general on basically anything! DO NOT agree with my father and brother. I am well under 60, much less 65, but I do survive on Social Security and Medicare ((I am permanently disabled). I also use voice recognition, because I can’t type (at all) and then bus subject to the whims of my voice recognition, which is sketchy at best! The point that I was making, was that Erin did not use language that implied anything like the idea that you have attributed to her.

First, my sympathies on the voice recognition. I worked on an early version of that with IBM some years ago. Voice recognition is better now, but not as much as would expect.

I have also been on SS disability and was fortunate to get it at the time.

You are entitled to your opinion, but I stand by what I said. Her wording did give the impression that she was painting all 60+ men with the same brush. I repeat, I did NOT believe that of her, all I was saying was, she could be giving that impression to people who were not familiar with her opinions.

From where I am reading, you also have a problem comprehending written English. Is it not your first language?

I love the irony, although it is tragic, of so many on Social Security and Medicare demanding government keep it’s hands off Social Security and Medicare.

Erin meant no disrespect to people over 60 that are of sane mind and appreciate what FDR and LBJ did.

I am. I’m terrified!
All you say is true, but those who don’t care about truth or facts don’t care…
I can’t wait for Nov. 10 or so, when we MAY know which way our nation has chosen

While I agree with what you’re saying, I have to dispute the ageist theme where anyone over 50 or 60 is a Reagan-Worshiping, tea-party, religious reich, nut job. I’ll be 70 in November and I am about as far from that description as one can be. Check out my posts on your own entries. I personally know several tea-party types and they are mostly under 50. Yes, they are mostly card-carrying, delusional members of the religious reich, and of the “My country, right or wrong” persuasion. But that mentality has nothing to do with age. Not everyone has had the advantages of being raised to question everything. Nor has everyone been taught to think for themselves and examine facts.

I don’t think stating (correctly) that the average age of a Tea Partier is 60-ish is saying everyone that age is a Tea Partier. I’ve read 2 books and numerous articles on the Tea Party and the majority (not all but most) are retired, white, upper middle class with investments, fundamentalist Christian and slightly to overtly racist and bigoted. My father, who is in his 70’s, is a card carrying member of the ACLU and refers to himself as “that old Communist,” so I do realize that not all folks over the age of 60 are Tea Partiers.

Maybe that’s not what you wanted to say, but that’s the impression you gave. Perhaps you should consider having your writing reviewed by someone else before you publish it. That’s standard practice among professional writers.
