The Sports MVP is Tim Tebow

Read Time:3 Minute, 3 Second

An old argument among sports fans is who’s the MVP flavor of the day. Some people say it’s the player with the best numbers. Steven A. Smith of ESPN says it should go to the player who is most valuable to his team. Steven A. Smith is out of his mind.

The most valuable player is the player who has the most impact on the league as a whole. And looking at all the great players who had the most impact the past twenty years, from Michael Jordan to Wayne Gretzky. From Barry Bonds to Peyton Manning. None have had more impact on their games or sports as a whole than Tim Tebow.

I’ve submitted dozens of posts to Mad Mike’s America. The ones that generate the most traffic concern Tiger Woods’ sex life and Tim Tebow. Further, listen to any sports talk show and you won’t go ten minutes without mention of Tim Tebow. Tebow has been in about 10 plays this year and every one of them has been replayed countless times on ESPN.

When Tim Tebow comes to town it’s an event. Father’s want their daughters to date Tim Tebow. Mothers want their daughters to date Tim Tebow. Gay women would go to the Liberty University retraining camp for Gays and Lesbians to date Tim Tebow.

Why the NFL allowed Tim Tebow to go to New York is still a mystery to me. There are teams like Jacksonville who can’t fill their stadium. If Tim Tebow were playing for Jacksonville every Sunday would be like Mecca during a pilgrimage with the millions of people there to praise the goodness of Tim Tebow and buy “God and Tebow are my Quarterbacks” t-shirts.

I know we like to make fun of Tim Tebow and he’s a good sport about it but another quality we look for in MVP’s is humility. The fact is the atmospheric vortex from Tebow flexing his bicep would probably knock most of us to the ground.

Sadly for Tim Tebow he’s stuck with the New York Jets and their vastly overrated head coach Rex Ryan. Tebow is stuck on the bench behind quarterback Mark Sanchez who will never reach whatever heights he could reach because his head coach is the vastly overrated Rex Ryan. But it still doesn’t matter as Tebow will still have more impact.

Jets fans and God fearing Tim Tebow lovers will fill the stadium each Sunday to root for Tebow to get on the field. The crowd will roar when Tebow’s number is called. The crowd will moan when Tebow is tackled. The crowd will boo when Tebow leaves the field before the next play. The sports networks will replay all the stuff Tebow did. They will all speculate when Tebow will take on a bigger role in the offense. When he will replace Sanchez as the starting quarterback. When he will replace Rex Ryan as head coach. A million Tebow jerseys will be sold. Children will brush with Tim Tebow Toothpaste. Heads of state will pay homage to Tim Tebow. Atheists will shake their heads in further disbelief.

After the football season is over Tom Brady or Peyton Manning of Aaron Rogers will probably get the NFL MVP. Numbers will be tossed around. QB ratings or yards per carry. All that stuff. And no doubt, whoever wins the award will have had less of an impact on the NFL or sports in general than Tim Tebow.

If only substance and talent mattered much anymore.

Thanks for the comments everyone. My hope is to gain the same notoriety for my articles as Tim Tebow gets for being Tim Tebow.

I hope you succeed except for better reasons, such as substance and talent.

Timmy T. is a circus in a football suit. That being said I hear he actually practices what he preaches and that sets him apart from most of the hypocrites. Good work here.

Really interesting post Joe. I must say that, in a way, both of you are correct. Tim Tebow is a star. He is a star because there are people really want to see him succeed so they can say that a good God fearing young man did well and was probably help by his faith, thus being a role model for their kids. Then there are others who are wanting him to fail miserably for the same reason. To those in the middle he is a curiosity. What is it about him that attracts so many people to him? Having watched Timmy Boy for a long time (I being an Alabama fan while he was playing for Florida) must say that he has a winning attitude about football. Enough so that, while at Florida, he inspired lesser players to play better than they normally would, and again at Denver, he had the players believing they were better than they were. His career will most likely die in New York because of Rex Ryan’s philosophy of using him in very limited situations. His leadership, inspiration, magic, or whatever it is simply will never have and effect in that role. Mark Sanchez is not a top level NFL quarterback and never will be. He doesn’t have the physical or leadership skills to handle that job. At best he is a journeyman quarterback who would be a backup anywhere else. Tebow, on the other hand could at least add some spark to his team once in a while for, as both of you have said, he is also a good storyline.

Joe, I agree with you about Tebow being a great story line. For the same reason as Paris Hilton, to use your example. Not for any outstanding talent, or accomplishments, but because people like to read about them.

To use another quote from H.L. Mencken, “No one ever lost money underestimating the taste of the American Public.”

As a contributor to MMA I have to disagree with your wrong reasons James. At least from this perspective. Tebow is great storyline. Tiger’s sex life is old and stale. When in doubt or suffering writer’s block, just write about Tim Tebow. He’s the sport’s world Paris Hilton. If he ever made a sex tape it would be pure gold and the economy would be saved.

I love this. Well done, Joe. Writer’s block or not, this a great piece.

You are correct, Tebow does have a great effect, but for the wrong reasons. It certainly isn’t his playing ability. At best, he is a mediocre quarterback. His overt display of his religion is not only contrary to the teachings of his own bible, it is pandering of the worst sort.

When the USA splits into separate countries, one will be a totalitarian theocracy. So long, Tebow and so long, religious reich. Good riddance to both.
