Family Drowns While Trying to Rescue Dog

Read Time:1 Minute, 40 Second

I love dogs, and my dogs, all seven of them, are part of the family, just like children.  I don’t like or trust people who don’t like dogs, and don’t want to be around them.  In most cases those people are bitter, small minded, humorless fools, and I don’t want them in my life.  When I read this story I realized I would have done what the unfortunate California did in an effort to save the life of any of my beloved critters.

(Newser) A Northern California tragedy appears to have claimed the lives of three family members: The Coast Guard ended a search today for a teenager whose parents were killed when the three all tried to rescue their dog from powerful surf Saturday. Powerful, 10-foot waves pulled the dog into the ocean as it ran to retrieve a stick at Big Lagoon, north of Eureka. The 16-year-old boy went after the dog, prompting his father to attempt a rescue. The teenager was able to get out of the waves but then went back into the water with his mother in search of his father. “Both were dragged into the ocean,” says a state parks district superintendent.

The couple’s daughter called police, and the dog got out of the water on its own. Rescuers eventually retrieved the mother’s body, and the father’s body washed ashore. The Coast Guard says the search for the teenager was stopped because a person without a wetsuit could not survive for long in the surf because of the frigid waters. Signs are posted near the beach parking lot warning beachgoers not to turn their back to the surf, and to pay special attention to “sneaker waves,” or swells that can seemingly appear from nowhere and violently smash onto the beach.

Add me to the list of yep I would do that to save my animals or any animal really, if I came across this on my travels.

This was a major tragedy but like the others here I would have been just like those folks. Rascal is a member of my family and I would do no less for him than I would do for any other member of my family. He would do the same for me (if I had a hot dog in my hand).

Yes, hot dogs are great motivators.

I did know a friend’s dog, an Airedale, (the dog, not the friend) who believed anyone in the swimming pool was drowning. He would jump in and pull you out. The only way we could swim was to shut the dog inside where he could not see us in the pool.

That makes me so sad!! I have no doubt that I would have done the exact same thing, probably with the same . That poor girl lost her whole family in one tragic swoop. I am glad to hear that the dog survived though. I guess this is an example of how smart dogs can be – sometimes way smarter than us it seems.

Such a tragic story. I too would have done the same thing!

I agree. One of the most beautiful photo series I have ever seen was of the man who jumped into turbulent water near a bridge to save the small dog of a stranger.
