What’s really happening in Gaza?

Read Time:2 Minute, 59 Second

The Gaza Strip  is a strip of land on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea that borders Egypt on the southwest and Israel on the east and north. It is 25 miles long, and approximately 7 miles wide for a total of 147 square miles.  The population of Gaza Strip is predominantly Sunni Muslim with 1.7 million people. The Gaza Strip has the 7th highest population growth rate in the world.

When analyzing the conflict in southern Israel it’s easy to get twisted up trying to figure out what happened first and why? In point of fact the conflict stems from a large, complex foundational problem.

It’s not just that nearly 13,000 rockets and shells have landed in Israel since 2001 nor is it that Hamas leader Fathi Hamad, stated that Hamas protects itself through the use of  “human shields of the women, the children, the elderly.”  It’s not just that Israel’s surgical strikes attempt to minimize the cost of the lives of civilians contrast directly with Hamas mindless aggression towards soldiers, civilians and children.

There is a more systemic issue at play here and that is acceptance. The real problem lies with the fact that Hamas’ founding charter advocates the destruction of Israel while refusing to acknowledge its very existence. The real problem is that Palestinian children in the Gaza Strip witness “Mickey Mouse Beaten to Death by an Israeli,” on their Saturday Morning Cartoon shows.  The real problem is that before the Gaza strip was even settled, and before an infrastructure even existed, Hamas started to assemble an arsenal of weapons with which to bomb Israel.

The real crime of this conflict is not just that nearly half of Israel is within striking distance of Gaza. The real crime is that Hamas’ terrorist regime, and purported quest to annihilate Israel, prevents any real progress in this part of the world.

The second point: why in the world do the Palestinians vote for a terrorist organization like Hamas?

This whole situation may well stem from the unintentional effects of British colonial policy, which pitted Jews vs Muslims vs Christians not to mention the artificial creation of a new Nation-state after WWII. Who does that? No one just makes a new nation out of thin air and expects it to go down well with the locals.  Arab Muslim leaders at the time were vehemently opposed to the idea of the creation of Israel, and yet Europeans still moved ahead.

Were the Europeans right or wrong in creating a land for the Jewish people? I can’t say, but they should’ve known that the creation of Israel would instigate the anger of the Arab Muslim world. They should’ve known that it has led to the situation that we see in the Middle East today. Unless Israel gives away everything they have to the surrounding Arab Muslim population, obviously not economically feasible, Israel will forever stand as a symbol of European imperialism and Zionism.

So what is the real issue here?  Is it Hamas?  Yes, they are preventing progress. Yes, the right of return that Palestinians seek will not be fulfilled by Hamas, so why would the Palestinians vote for a party like Hamas?  What’s the gain?  How does it benefit them today and how will it provide for them in the future?  Maybe there is no answer.

I’m sorry, but if there is no mention of how Israel has been starving Gaza, to the point where over half of school-age kids are anemic and 10% of them have had their growth stunted, then your article shows fact selection bias and I dismiss it as propaganda disguised as news. I am not pro-Palestine, nor am I pro-Israel. I am pro-truth, and frankly, this article just didn’t have enough of it.

You can only put so much into an article and I find no fault in what’s written here.

James that’s so very true. Why the United States continues to hold itself hostage to this conflict can only come down to one thing: a continued presence in the middle east. Secondly, Israel needs to get serious if they plan on living without rockets flying through their windows. They need to invade Gaza in a final, decisive action. This is a David and Goliath match, and this one Goliath, Israel, is certain to win. As of the last several years their action is purely reaction, allowing Hamas to convince themselves of their ersatz superiority and encourage them to continue attacking.

Another thing that disturbs me. Of all the people in the world, you would think that Israel would understand the need for people to have a homeland. Does it seem impossible that Israel could not find a way to make peace with the Palestinians by providing them with a place to call their own and autonomy?

A move like that would yank the rug from under Hamas by showing that the Jewish people have done something that Hamas could promise but never do.

There is a certain hypocrisy there James. One has to wonder what is going on that perhaps the world isn’t seeing. Why would Israel NOT want to “yank the rug” from under Hamas?

That’s exactly what I have been wondering. Why would Israel not want to show the world that they can be the “good guys?”

The entire Israel thing is a showcase of insanity. The conflict between Arabs and Jews has gone of for centuries. So why would the Jews want to establish their country in the middle of millions of people who want nothing more than to see them all dead? How rational is that?

For a fraction of what the USA alone has spent propping up Israel, we could have given them Arizona, new Mexico, or Utah and let them live happily ever after.
