Union Man Throws Punch at Koch Brothers

Read Time:1 Minute, 52 Second

In Michigan a reporter was punched by a Union man.   Right Wingers and Fox News will decry it as union thuggery.  The reality is that the reporter was likely a plant sent in to agitate an already agitated person.

A new theory says that a wave of massive technological change gave life to organized labor -- and another wave took it all away
A new theory says that a wave of massive technological change gave life to organized labor — and another wave took it all away

Michigan republicans rammed an anti-union bill granting the right to not pay union dues, while still making unions negotiate, and defend those who decide to scab.  At the same time you may still enjoy the benefits of job security along with wages provided by unions.

So not only will republicans demand unions be declared terrorist organizations, but too many in the center and the left will express sorrow that this “incident” happened and how it will harm unions.   To both of these groups I say “piss off.”

The one group that defends our rights to a safe workplace, decent wages and a secure retirement is the union.   A Union Man was standing with his brothers and sisters in Michigan in solidarity against this attack on them and the future prosperity of the working middle class.

When I was a kid, I remember a story on the news about hockey great Bobby Orr.  It seems he was being harassed by some fool and after he’d had quite enough he punched him in the head.  Of course the idiot tried to take it to court where the judge told him to grow up and pointed out if he hadn’t been harassing Mr. Orr he wouldn’t have gotten belted in the mouth in the first place.

So a “reporter” got belted in the mouth after goading an already agitated Union Man.   The “incident” was witnessed by dozens of “anti-union” people paid to be there by the Koch Brothers.    Call me a union thug if you want but as far as I’m concerned the “reporter” got what he deserved.

Dr. Michael Parenti, progressive political scientist reminds us of the importance of unions, workers organizations, workers strikes, etc gave us a better standard of living not capitalism. It has been the struggles of US workers over the past 100 or more years that fought for almost all increases in wages, benefits, etc(someone overstates ibm beneficence). Up until the late 1970’s the corporations and wealthy are pushing the middle and working class back to the 19th century. Every administration since late in Jimmy Carters, accelerated in Reagan’s, and every administration democrat or republican has been cutting back “promote the general welfare” for the middle and working class. If they weren’t allowed to use child and misery wages in other parts of the world, they would expect the working class for example forced to send their children along with themselves to work 12 hours a day for poverty wages.

Yet another manufactured crisis by Fox news and the fright wing. I’ve seen a few videos today and what Fox was showing was edited just like they did with the protests in WI to show palm trees in winter where WI has no palm trees. The guy that got punched, he started the whole thing by pushing against people. Dude just got back what he gave out.

That’s why it’s called “Faux News.” They should have to register as a PAC.

Comments are ating goofy bitcodavid. Not my department.

As for the uppercut or haymaker or jab? Who could tell. When union guys fight it ain’t like watching Sugar Ray Leonard. Arms and legs flailing everywhere. I long for the good old days when we were issued axe handles and had classes on how to look menacing. I had a great menacing union stare.

Just kidding. We never were issued axe handles. I was serious about the stare though. I had a good one.

@ Joe – Ahh, yes. I believe they called it “the ’30s.”

James. You’re testing my memory. I’m pretty sure I was doing the projector thing for a couple of years back in the late ’80s / early ’90s. I might be wrong about the Macs, but I do remember my boss drooling over a “Sun Workstation.” The thing he liked about it was you could add “Infinite” memory. All the way up to 16Mb! Who would ever need that much memory?

Like what does it really matter, I was gone from IBM in ’81. That was before Macs, for example.

Speaking of that, the first Mac I personally owned was an SE model. I’d been using them for clients for a couple of years by then, though. It came with 1 MB of Ram and I upgraded it to 4 MB and thought I was flying a jet, then.

I upgraded my iMac I have not from 1 GB to 4 GB for about 1/8th og the price then on to 6 GB. Now, I could get at least 16 GB in an iMac and more in a Mac Pro. Everything marches on.

Yeah, but I love a stroll down memory (no pun intended!) lane.

I love my Mac, and my iPhone, and my MacBook Air. I actually had an iPad but really didn’t use it, so I sold it.

Joe are you having trouble as well? I need to know these things so I can fix them. Might have to disable the edit plugin.

Mile, I am having the same problem with Firefox. It seems that all of the extra warning text disappears after a while. That’s even more strange. The edit function doesn’t work for me, either.

I’ll look into it Jim. Might have to deactivate the edit function.

The folks who built the Ajax Edit software have apparently deserted their posts. As a result I had to disable the plugin. You shouldn’t have trouble anymore, but you won’t be able to edit until I find replacement software so write most carefully my friend 🙂

DEC still existed, Lotus was cool and the ultimate computer was made by a company called “Sun.”

Put it this way. The PS-2 was the big deal, and Macs were still little gray boxes with monochrome screens.

That would have had to have been before 1992, then.

This would have been about 2 years before I was married – so… say 1992.

Guys. What’s up with my comments? I haven’t so many “illegal operations” since I worked for that organ transplant company.

There you go. That was 11 years after I left the company. Things had started to change when I left so I am not at all surprised about 1992.

If it makes you feel any better, it’s not picking on only you, I get the same”illegal operation stuff, too.

That’s troubling David. What browser are you using? Word Press just went through a major software change, and didn’t tell anyone. If there’s a bug I need to report it. I know I’m having trouble with comments on Chrome, but not Firefox.

I’m using Firefox. But I’ve been experiencing some interesting “features” on DeafInPrison, too. My stats page is all messed up.

This problem only seems to happen after I upload the comment. When I return to your site to post another comment or to reply, all the code noise is gone.

I wouldn’t lose too much sleep over it. I bet they get it fixed in a day or so.

here’s the code, in case you’re not seeing it.

Seeing it in Chrome. Dumped the plugin. Was outdated and no longer maintained. Now I have to find another that allows comment editing.

What year was this? I worked for them from 1968 to 1981. Up to that time, they had never had a layoff. Perhaps the person was pulling your leg?

Wow! What happened here? It won’t let me edit it either.

I may have to disable that feature. It might be what’s causing the trouble. Let me know if it keeps up.

Two things. 1) was it a jab, or was it an uppercut. I see the difference as significant. A shot to the face never really hurt anybody – believe me, I know. But a haymaker – an uppercut or a carefully placed hook can. The difference is between a black eye and brain damage.

2) Here’s an IBM story for you, James. I used to repair and install video projectors. These were the old 3-gun, liquid cooled, 30,000 dollar monstrosities that pre-dated our modern LCD projectors that any chimp can install and run.

At one point I got sent to an IBM building in Waltham – off Rte. 128. It was a huge job. I had to install and calibrate something like 20 projectors. So, at 30 grand a pop, you do the math. Anyway, the building was brand new – and completely vacant. The doors were open so loading in was no problem, but there was simply nobody there.

During the course of the day, I finally saw a fellow Human being, the janitor. I asked him, “where is everybody,” and he replied…

“They’ve all been laid off.” Maybe it was so IBM could afford all those projectors.

If business wanted to make unions go away that would be the way. treat employees the way management would want to be treated.

Good info James. Appreciate it.

Sadly, the company is not what it was. It eventually was essentially taken over by large insurance companies that own huge blocks of stock. The entire attitude of the company and the way it treated employees was changed. Benefits were subtly slashed and many of the administrative details for the medical plan, for example, were turned back upon the employees. It was no longer the company it was. Very sad.

“I’m stickin’ with the union,
I’m stickin with the union…”

When I worked for IBM, there had never been a union anywhere in the company. But IBM, in those days, treated employees decently with fair wages, good benefits, and had never had a layoff, not even during the depression. They paid employees then to build machines for stock. When the government created Social Security, IBM was the only company that could provide the equipment (card punches, sorters, and readers) almost immediately. That sale made IBM as a company.

Even in the 70’s the Social Security facility was the largest single customer for the Cincinnati office.

Treating employees decently can pay large dividends for a company.
