Cardinal Roger M. Mahony applauds during the December installation of Kevin W. Vann as bishop of the Diocese of Orange County. The public censure of Mahony, one of the most powerful men in the Catholic Church, was unparalleled, experts said. (Genaro Molina, Los Angeles Times / December 10, 2012)
The former archbishop of Los Angeles has been removed from all public duties due to the central role he played in the coverup of child abuse. Tens of thousands of pages revealing the extent of the abuse crisis, now posted on the church’s website, are “brutal and painful reading. The behavior described in these files is terribly sad and evil,” said current archbishop Jose Gomez. The public action against Cardinal Roger Mahony—which comes within hours of the documents’ court-ordered release—is “unprecedented” within the American Catholic Church, according to the Los Angeles Times.
“To tell a cardinal he can’t do confirmations, can’t do things in public, that’s extraordinary,” says a Jesuit priest. While his confirmation schedule has been wiped, Mahony’s daily life won’t look much different, says an archdiocese spokesman, noting that the retired priest will stay “a priest in good standing” and can still celebrate Mass. The leading victim’s group isn’t happy with the outcome, USA Today notes. “Hand-slapping Cardinal Roger Mahony is a nearly meaningless gesture,” says a rep. A bishop who aided in the coverup has also resigned, Gomez said.

He’s retired anyway so this was, as usual, a meaningless gesture. Remember, it took a court order to get the documents released. It wasn’t as though they did it out of remorse or because it is the right things to do.

Very true James. I don’t think The Church understands remorse, in any sense of the word.

They understand about instilling it in the gullible, but not for themselves.

The hypocrisy of the Church is manifest.
Power and control over the faithful is the goal, always has been. And so it is with all religions and faiths.
Such is the result of belief in irrational mysticism.

But Les, once upon a time, there was the British Empire, and now it is no more. In dreams I like to think that religion will be “once upon a time” and reason will prevail. It’s such a good dream.

Whoo boy, a wrist slap for a retired guy and the victims live with the horror of what happened to them daily. Hardly seems fair now does it? Wonder if they will take his passport away, so he doesn’t get to do a runner like Law did, when he left Boston for the sanctuary of Vatican city with the rest of the gowned ones there.

For whatever reason protecting the “institution” is a higher calling than punishing child molesters and their enablers.
Unfortunately the only reward for doing the right thing is the sake of doing the right thing. Shitbags like this cardinal get to retire in comfort after a few weeks embarrassment. Joe Paterno mercifully died. The molesters don’t think they did anything wrong.
And the Catholic Church wonders why so many leave the Catholic Church.
