“I have apologized as best as I can to my wife, and we have worked together to strengthen our relationship,” Domenici said in his statement. “I deeply regret this and am very sorry for my behavior. I hope New Mexicans will view that my accomplishments for my beloved state outweigh my personal transgression.”
Domenici served six terms in the Senate, from 1973 until 2009.
Michelle Laxalt worked as a lobbyist, and was named one of the “top 50 lobbyists in D.C.” by The Washingtonian in 1993 and 1998. Her most recent lobbyings were made in 2010, on behalf of the American Gaming Association, and three companies connected to American financier T. Boone Pickens: BP Capital, Clean Energy Fuels and Mesa Wind and Mesa Water. It is unclear whether she ever lobbied Domenici.
“I come from a political family and learned early in life the value of privacy,” Laxalt said in her statement to the newspaper. “I vowed that I would make personal decisions based not on politics, but on my values. This self-pledge was tested when one night’s mistake led to pregnancy more than 30 years ago.”
She also said she raised Adam Laxalt as a single parent, and admitted to her dalliance with Domenici in order to protect his father.
“Recently information has come to me that this sacred situation might be twisted, re-written out of whole cloth, and shopped to press outlets large and small in a vicious attempt to smear, hurt and diminish Pete Domenici, an honorable man, his extraordinary wife, Nancy, and other innocents,” she said in her statement.
The Atlantic Wire reported that Michelle Laxalt praised Domenici’s character in an appearance on CNN in 2007, when the then-Senator was accused of being behind the firing of a U.S. attorney in his state.
“When you’re attacking the integrity of someone who has been in public service for his entire lifetime, at great sacrifice, supporting no fewer than eight children and with the many sacrifices and the many contributions Senator Domenici has made, not only to the country, but to the state of New Mexico,” she said at the time. “I don’t think one political appointee who has a chip on his shoulder because he was asked to leave a position that he wasn’t offered permanency in to begin with, should ever take a crack at the integrity of Pete Domenici.”
UPDATE, 2:31 p.m. EST: According to The Washington Post, Domenici supported the impeachment of then-President Bill Clinton for covering up his affair with intern Monica Lewinsky.
All reasonable observers admit that the President lied under oath and undertook a substantial and purposeful effort to hide his behavior from others in order to obstruct justice in a legal proceeding. My good friends and Democratic colleagues, Senators Joe Lieberman, Daniel Patrick Moynihan, Bob Kerrey, Diane Feinstein, and Robert Byrd, among others, have bluntly acknowledged publically [sic] that the President lied, misled, obstructed, and attempted in many ways to thwart justice’s impartial course in a civil rights case. The sticking point has been: Does this misbehavior rise to the level of impeachable offenses?
I have concluded that President Clinton’s actions do, indeed, rise to the level of impeachable offenses that the Founding Fathers envisioned.

The vagina is the most powerful force in the universe. Makes men do naughty things and turns us into lying hypocrites.
Looking at the big picture, yeah. It’s worth it. Thanks ladies.

Yep and all that power in such a tiny thing right. I know mine is all powerful and knowing, kinda like a seer or some such. I have to keep it locked away though because it might make some men quiver at its power. Oh and yer welcome.

It always makes me smile and mad at the same time when Republicans get their hand caught in the “cookie jar”, so to speak.

Your hypocrisy radiates.
Clinton vs Domenici = Apples vs oranges.
Did Domenici lie under oath?
I understand your hatred for the Republicans, the party of Lincoln & Reagan. You’re not alone with your feelings. I’ve noted many times since 2000 how communists, socialists, marxists, sharia loving muslims, atheists, and feminazis, to name a few, do too.

I’ve noticed how you have no idea what communism, socialism, Marxism, etc. Really are.
You are completely unaware that communism has never existed anywhere on earth after the first few months following the 1917 Russian Revolution. The terms “Communism” and “Socialism” were co-opted by totalitarian dictatorships to conceal what they were really doing.
In point of fact, the countries in the world with the most socialistic governments are those such as Sweden, Denmark, Iceland, Germany, and many others I could name.
In every case, these are freely-elected governments. In every case the populace is healthier, more contended, better educated, and more affluent than say, the USA where numbskull Rethugnicans oppose everything except more power to the companies that fuel their election campaigns.
You choice of stress words reveals how you rely upon emotions rather than facts. That’s understandable, facts would only confound your beliefs.

I took it for granted that in the 21st century everyone here understood the modern application for the term communism (big “C” if you will) as it has been applied to the collectivization & totalitarian policies starting with Lenin & Stalin that were influenced by marxian theory. How did that work out?
If you’d like to educate me on it I’m all for it – never feel like I’m too old to learn. Thx in advance. Lets don’t go back to the Bible and use the lessons in Genesis.

You are wrong. You obviously do not know. Exactly how were they influenced by Marist theory? All “communist” states have been nothing more that totalitarian regimes that used the cover of communism to enslave the people.
Did you not read or not believe my points about socialist countries?
When you used the phrase “take it for granted” it told me you do not want to think about it any further.
To answer your question, totalitarian states never work out well for the common people. Witness any of them you care to name. For that matter, how well are things working for you in the USA right now? Let’s don;t blame Obama for anything other than failing to repudiate and reverse the policies of “W”. For all he has dome of that, he could be GWB’s hand-picked successor.

Had Pete been asked under oath he would have lied as all men do until the jig is obviously up Rambo.

That’s a mighty bold statement for you to say you know he would of lied under oath. Are you a descendant of Edgar Cayce?
With Clinton it’s a fact, and Obama’s is a never ending ‘laundry list’.

I have an idea. Let’s put him under oath and ask some other questions to which we already know the answers. For that matter, maybe you, too?

I doubt they are any more hypocritical than anyone else who breaks a marriage vow. Where they take the hypocrite prize, hands down, is when they say they are not hypocritical.

In his statement to the Senate re: impeachment Senator Domenici pointed out the obstruction of justice and lying by the President as his reason for finding President Clinton guilty. But he could not let it go at that. He had to add an hypocritical self-aggrandizing statement.
“…Truthfulness is the first pillar of good character in the Character Counts program of which I have been part of establishing in New Mexico. Many of you in this chamber have joined me in declaring the annual “Character Counts Weeks.” This program teaches grade school youngsters throughout America about six pillars of good character. Public and private schools in every corner of my state teach children that character counts; character makes a difference; indeed, character makes all the difference…”
Sin of omission Senator?

A hypocritical politician engaging in a self-aggrandizing statement? Who would have thought?
Isn’t it amusing how often these things come back to brunch on their butts?
