Yesterday news of human waste covering the floors of the Dream, and on Saturday, steering issues forced the Elation to call for a tugboat. Today, according to CNN, the Legend is having sailing-speed problems related to the Azipod propulsion system. As a result it had to skip a visit to Grand Cayman and head back to Florida.
The Azipod was also the system troubling the Elation, CNN notes. The Legend is still set to arrive on time, and its “safety systems and hotel services are all functioning normally,” Carnival says. Still, passengers are very unhappy, one tells CNN via email. “Many have already said they will not book again with Carnival.” It’s not clear how many people are on the Legend, but it can hold some 2,100 souls, NBC News notes. They’re due to get a $100 refund. Meanwhile, flights begin today for passengers stuck on the Dream.

I won’t be taking a cruise with Carnival anytime soon. How can so many ships, in such a short period of time, break down? I imagine they’re taking all sorts of maintenance short cuts to save money. Too bad they’re not flying US flags. They wouldn’t be able to get away with that shit if they had to undergo regular US inspections.

I’ll stick with the blue and gold fleet from the SF piers to Alcatraz and Angel island for now.

Carnival was a pioneer in the concept of shorter, less expensive cruises. Its ships are known for their Las Vegas-style decor and entertainment. The line calls its ships The Fun Ships, and there are a wide range of activities offered on board. Its trademark is the funnel, which is red, white and blue and shaped like a whale’s tail. The mascot for Carnival is “Fun Ship Freddy”, a character in the shape of Carnival’s distinctive funnel.*
