A vicious dog attack on a four-year-old girl in the Bronx district of New York City has been captured on a surveillance camera.

The pit bull ran across the street and latched onto the terrified toddler who was out walking with her mother on Sunday afternoon.

The whole attack was captured by a security camera at a nearby store.

Several bystanders ran over and eventually managed to tear the animal off.

“The dog was biting her,” witness Eduardo Candelier told WNBC. “The girl was crying, she was going crazy.”

The child was treated for small puncture wounds to her right arm and right leg.

The owner of the pit bull, who turned up after the attack, was issued with a summons for letting the dog off its leash.

There are no plans to have the animal put down.

It seems that leash laws are as effective as gun laws. Some people simply do not give a damn for others or the law.

New York is famous (infamous) for enforcing its leash laws. If I were to guess I suspect this dog slipped its leash. I also doubt that dog will be allowed to live for much longer.

Over here the animal would be destroyed humanely without a shadow of a doubt. Personally I think it’s the stupid owner who needs putting down!!

Norman I’m amazed they haven’t in this case, but suspect they will soon.

Like so many things MM reports on, this is a double edged tragedy. Of course, it’s sad for the little girl, but it’s doubly sad because now we have one more vicious pit-bull story. These GREAT dogs have to live down an unfair rep. This will be just one more straw on the camel’s back.

David that’s the first thing I thought of, and even considered leaving the breed name out of the story, but thought that would be dishonest. It is what it is, but it’s sad for all concerned nonetheless.

Wow, you rednecks who own pitbulls have now discovered computers? This dog should be shot. And who cares (other than white trash) whether it’s a fast, humane shot or a slow, “inhumane” shot? This dog just lost his fair chance at humane.

I think it’s people like you, Sheila, who should be put down, and not humanely either.

How would you have reacted if it had been a Collie or a German Shepherd, or maybe a sheep dog?

Not a bit of ignorance or prejudice in your post is there?

Actually, in watching the video and working with dogs of all breeds as a pet resort worker, the tail is much more along the lines of lab or shepherd – fluffy like fur, rudder like appearance. the head shot of the dog, does appear bully breed, but that could range from an American Bulldog, to a Boxer to any of the “pit bull” breeds.

until a picture of the actual dog appears in print, i’m reserving judgement of breed.

also, bc the owner was actually WARNING ppl back, leads me to believe this isn’t this dog’s first offense. this dog should have been euth’d a long time ago. it’s so sad that bc of the owner’s utter disregard for his animal’s unacceptable behavior, a little girl is scarred for life.

Thanks for your input Alix, although the NY press made it clear that the dog was indeed a pit bull.
