An Indonesian woman drowned her nine-year-old son in the bath, claiming she was worried that his “small penis” would affect his prospects for the future, a police spokesman said Thursday.
The 38-year-old woman from the capital Jakarta told police her son had had a small penis prior to being circumcised, but that it appeared to shrink further after the operation, police spokesman Rikwanto, who goes by one name, told AFP.
“She told police investigators that she killed him as he would have a bleak future with his small penis,” Rikwanto said.
“She drowned her son in a bathtub filled with water. She then dressed him and laid him on a bed. After that, she went to a nearby police office to report her crime.”
Rikwanto said the woman was fully conscious of what she had done, but police ordered a psychological test to assess her mental condition.

Yeah. Broken toaster – that’s a clinical term.

Sadly, if indeed the boy had “micro-penis,” this is treatable with a small dose of testosterone.
I work with an organization that serves individuals with X and Y chromosome variations…technically sex chromosome aneuploidy. http://www.genetic.org One variation, 47,XXY, and the associated bundle of symptoms known as Klinefelter Syndrome, sometimes causes micro-penis. Early intervention solves this problem, and micro-penis can be treated without an underlying diagnosis of the cause.
If this child had ever been seen by a doctor, a significant portion of the culpability for this child’s death falls to the doctor who failed to address the problem and communicate to the mother that the problem could be addressed. I realize that the state of medical care in India might not be up to the US standard, but Jakarta isn’t the rural back-woods, micro-penis is not rocket science, and India cranks out LOTS of doctors (many of whom eventually find their way to the US), so there is every reason to believe this child’s micro-penis could have been corrected and the mother’s concerns address as a simple matter of competent, routine care.
So… the condition of the “toaster” wasn’t the only problem here. Widespread ignorance of these conditions leads to only one in four individuals EVER being diagnosed in their lifetimes. And these conditions are prevalent – 1:500 have an SCA. Other variations are 47,XYY (also male); Trisomy X (we avoid 47,XXX for obvious reasons…especially on the internet), 48,XXYY, and a broad spectrum of more or less every imaginable sex chromosome combo including mosaicism (where individual cells each have their own sex chromosome makeup).
I will write an original article on this “unknown epidemic” one day soon.

Jim, 2 things. While India does indeed crank out tons of doctors, Jakarta is in Indonesia. Moot difference to us, perhaps, but probably rather significant to them.
(2)I grew up with a lot of hoods and goons. One such hood and goon had a condition known (back then, anyway) as XYY Chromosome Anomaly. This dude had a full beard by age 14. He was also the craziest, most violent, most sexually abusive shitball I’ve ever met. A full blown Sociopath. However, in a biology class, the professor tried to tell me that XYY causes no behavioral tendencies toward violence. I just told him to go look this guy up, and if he made it back, alive – I’d doff my hat to his scientific supremacy. Obviously, you have a body of knowledge on this subject. I’d be curious as to your views.

I’ve read about this condition and it’s the only one, in my opinion, that might demonstrate a link between genetics and criminality.

My mistake about Jakarta…I was in a rush and made a mistake. If the child was seen by a doctor anywhere, the doc should have assisted. The probability of having a doctor’s care is, no doubt, quite different from place to place and culture to culture.
47,XYY is pretty far from the topic of micro-penis, but since you mentioned your experience…
The violence of XYY has been disproved. There is a full spectrum of personalities among those with SCA, and so, as with the general population, some can be violent, but most are withdrawn and shy.
Communication deficits, executive function problems and other issues can lead a person with SCA to have emotional outbursts…as one might in response to being bullied or being immature for one’s age. This is not violent behavior.
The “killer gene” theory associated with Jacob’s Syndrome, 47,XYY, was generated by and perpetuated by early prison-population studies…which obviously skewed results. Early genetics studies first presumed criminality as a cause/effect result of different genetic makeup. Wildly unfounded assumptions about being “supermales” led early “researchers” to look for aggressiveness among inherently aggressive study subjects…a VERY small sample size of prisoners. Surprise, surprise, they found what they were looking for. This truly “junk science” is immortal thanks to the internet and a propensity of Google searchers to consume the more lurid, sensational content over the more sensible, scholarly material that’s available.
So, just as it makes no sense to generalize about African Americans based on a sample size of 1 (say, Michael Vick), it makes no sense to generalize about those with XYY based on a sample size of a half-dozen or so convicted criminals…or your personal experience with one XYY guy who just so happened to be, as you put it, “…the craziest, most violent, most sexually abusive shitball I’ve ever met.” I don’t doubt that he could have been, but this one individual is not the stereotype for all.
Here’s the story on XYY: http://www.genetic.org/Portals/0/Public/Docs/XYY%20FAQ%20-%20FINAL%20-%20Rev%208-2-12.pdf

Jim, David, and Mike, first let me say that I am glad I was not born in Jakarta.
While the double Y chromosome theories of aggression have been unproven there have been some interesting studies that deal with what some are calling a false sense of aggression due to a double Y chromosome. Because of the early theories some men actually believe that because they have the extra y chromosome they are supposed to be aggressive. There have been some studies that have indicated that a so called “Warrior Gene” (Monoamine oxidase A-L) exists which can predict aggressive behavior. However, these studies are still in their infancy.

I’ve read about the Warrior Gene Bill. If they can ever prove that link conclusively it will shake up the criminology paradigm.

Well, this is so sad! The mother’s lack of knowledge combined by the focus on the sexual organ’s size is hard to understnd, but that’s a culture I do not know about. I can’t imagine what went through that young boy’s mind as his own trusted mother was holding him under the water to murder him. For me, that’s what this story was about.

P.S. to David:
You say you grew up with “a lot of hoods and goons.” Without reading too much into this…perhaps we all did…if the culture of your youth was particularly violent and goonish, there might be a correlation between the particular individual’s behavior and that culture.
If a kid grew up in “the OC,” it would not be a surprise to see that kid in a gang. A kid who is inherently the target of bullying would seek out the protections of a gang. Our group actually supported the clemency appeal of Sidney Cornwell in Ohio. Cornwell had XXY (not XYY), and he was on death row for murdering a child in a failed gang hit of a competing gang leader. Cornwell is quite developmentally disabled, lived with an SOB father who abused him, and so he turned to a gang for family. Inevitably his turn came to “do a deed” as part of his loyalty to the gang, and so he was tapped to do the hit. (Perhaps a mix of proving himself and hazing–a.k.a. being bullied by his fellow gang members.) The whole story is tragic…and a small child ended up the victim. But Cornwell’s defense was inept and never took into account his diagnosis and his obvious disability. He was sentenced to death. We, among others, intervened and plead for clemency by the outgoing governor, Strickland, who commuted Cornwell’s sentence to life without parole.
The point of the story is that Cornwell became a gang member and eventually a murderer IN PART to compensate for his own weaknesses. MANY of the XXY and XYY guys are genetically tall and large, so for any one individual to change from a bullied victim to a big, hulking bully…as Cornwell did…isn’t entirely out of the question.
Nature and nurture are always in a struggle.
