Carolyn McCarthy (D) New York

The NRA was alive and well at the republican shoot out in Maryland [last week] known as CPAC.  Speakers like libertarian Rand Paul, and nutty Sarah Palin captured the attention of mindless Tea Baggers and other party extremists, while the NRA delighted in the attention it was getting from the crazy choir.

Twenty years ago, Representative Carol McCarthy’s husband was brutally gunned down on the streets of New York by a dirt bag  targeting people at random.  He was armed with a handgun loaded with a high capacity magazine.  Her son was also shot and seriously wounded during the spree.  This terrible tragedy prompted McCarthy to become an advocate for gun control.

Despite McCarthy’s personal experience with the horrors of gun violence it didn’t not stop the NRA from mocking her understanding of the issues surrounding firearms. NRA Organizer Colton Kerrigan played a video of the New York congresswoman and made fun of her for not knowing what a barrel shroud is, using the episode to dismiss her entire push for stronger gun laws. She has “no idea what [she's] writing, never shot a gun before, and yet [she's] going to tell you what you should and should not own to make everybody else safer.”

KERRIGAN: These lawmakers who write these laws have no idea what they’re talking about. They’ve never shot a firearm before, they couldn’t tell you what a barrel shroud is. They couldn’t tell you what a mount is for a bayonet. They probably couldn’t tell you what a flash suppressor is. Yet these are the people who are writing the laws saying we need to ban these certain types of firearms. [...] The underlying theme of all of this is, at the end of the day, the lawmakers have no idea what they’re writing, never shot a gun before, and yet they’re going to tell you what you should and should not own to make everybody else safer, yet they couldn’t tell you the difference between the butt or the barrel of a gun.

Watch:

The NRA is disparaging McCarthy for her support of a perfectly reasonable law. Barrel shrouds can be used to facilitate faster and more accurate fire into crowds of people — that is, precisely the sort of assault that claimed McCarthy’s husband’s life. Picking out features like barrel shrouds in assault weapon bans is an effective proxy mechanism for defining the most dangerous weapons currently being sold.

Moreover, to say that a woman who personally knows the tragic impact firearms but has “never shot a gun before” can’t have a valid perspective on gun laws is ludicrous. Her experience with gun violence is no less (and arguably much more) relevant to debates about gun laws than that of gun aficionados. Why does the mere fact of growing up going to a shooting range mean that one’s opinion should be given more weight than that of a woman whose husband was gunned down?

The NRA is governed by fools and monsters, but most of its membership are normal, everyday folk.

These are the same guys that have no vagina yet want to lord over the rest of us womenfolk what our vagina’s should and should not be doing. See dumbass, works both ways. Cheeses H Keeryst these people piss me off.

This woman lost her husband to gun violence, should not matter one whit if it was a little gun, big gun, barrel shrouded wth that is, or bazooka. She has first hand experience from the victim’s point of view and is speaking up, but for these idiots it’s all about the minority of gun manufacturers that give them that sweet, sweet coin they want to protect. Did I already say these idiots piss me off, well they do.

I can’t for the life of me fathom why any sane person would object to gun controls.

Clearly if there are already controls in place they are failing.

I know all that ‘right to bare arms’ guff in your constitution but surely there’s nothing wrong in tightening gun controls to prevent all these school/college massacres and so forth.

What’s the equivalent term over there for ‘common sense’ when this NRA lot are speaking?
