Why not do some hyping for my home boy Luke? He’s leading this weeks PGA Tour stop, the Honda Classic with a blistering round of 63 Friday. Luke is a real story and I believe he’ll post at least three victories before the end of next year, contend in three “majors,” and make the U.S. Ryder Cup team. In point of fact I’d rather talk about an ethical young player over mental clowns who abandon ship after a bad start, but Rory M. is all the news.
They say Rory McIlroy was having a bad day. Halfway through his round he handed his score card to Ernie Els and said he was ‘outta here.’ Rory told reporters that followed him to his car he had a “toothache.”
The fact is Rory made a bad decision last year when he switched equipment and signed with Nike. Rather than fix the situation, by going back to his old equipment, Rory decided to stay with the new stuff, finally giving up on it at Dubai where, coincidentally, he played like crap.
What made it worse and even more embarrassing? He was with legitimate Hall of Famer Ernie Els who wasn’t impressed. Arnold Palmer or Gary Player would have lectured and intimidated Rory so much he either would have continued the round or left the country. Hell. Forty five years ago nobody would have had the balls to quit on Arnie, as he was built like a brick shithouse and probably could have broken Rory McIlroy in two.
I’m thinking it’s a good thing Tiger’s ex wife Elin wasn’t around to konk Rory in the head with her trusty nine iron.
Perhaps I’m being mean to Rory and maybe he did have a toothache. To his credit, after collapsing at The Masters a couple years ago he worked his way back to win two majors and become the number one player in the world. That being said though, I still would rather watch my homeboy Luke Guthrie because that’s a story worth watching.

McIlroy is a whiny little baby who needs a good clubbing. Ha. Get it?

Everyone has bad days and good days. Just because he’s into professional sports doesn’t mean he’s above the fray of humanity.

Since when is playing golf that bad a thing to do? No defense for what Rory did. He can be forgiven with a well worded apology to the tour and fans. Yet to hear one.

Joe, I’m with you. You don’t don’t quit in the middle of a match unless you have an injury with physically prevents you from competing. If you are having a bad day it doesn’t suddenly happen, it was there at the start. Just withdraw before the tournament start, but you don’t quit just because you are showing that you are human and are having a really bad day. I don’t know what his problem was/is but that was a classless act, period. He may win more tournaments but to me he is a wuss.
