Read Time:4 Minute, 0 Second

“Game of Thrones,” the sweeping American fantasy saga based on the book series by George R.R. Martin, is as big a hit here in Australia as it is elsewhere in the world. But now that Season Three has finished, you’re probably a bit lost as to what to watch. Here are 10 great fantasy films to keep you satisfied until Season Four begins.

“Alice in Wonderland”

Directed by offbeat creator Tim Burton, and starring Johnny Depp, this 2010 fantasy film grossed over $1 billion worldwide and is currently the thirteenth highest-grossing movie ever. The film was actually developed by Burton in an effort to bring new life to a story that he had never connected to in its original novel form. Keep an eye out for young Aussie actress Mia Wasikowska as Alice too.

“Excalibur”

The definitive telling of the story of King Arthur, this 1981 film features memorable cinematography and a remarkable musical score. Look out for appearances of established actors Helen Mirren, Liam Neeson and Patrick Stewart in their younger years!

“Reign of Fire”

The story takes place in England in the year 2020, after dragons have re-awakened and start setting fire to Earth. This is a dark, post-apocalyptic action fantasy film starring Matthew McConaughey and Christian Bale as the movie’s masculine heroes.

“Pan’s Labyrinth”

Sometimes referred to as an “Alice in Wonderland for grown-ups,” Pan’s Labyrinth was created by writer/director Guillermo del Toro. Blending reality and fantasy, this haunting film tells the tale of an imaginative young girl who might also be a mythical princess. George R.R. Martin lists this movie as one of his favourite fantasy films of all time.

“Clash of the Titans”

Starring home-grown Aussie hunk Sam Worthington, “Clash of the Titans” is a 2010 fantasy-adventure film that’s loosely based on the Greek myth of Perseus. In typical individual fashion, Worthington apparently chose not to wear sandals while filming, instead painting toes on his running shoes so he could perform his stunts better!

“Inkheart”

This adventure film is based on Cornelia Funke’s best-selling novel of the same name that has been translated into 37 languages. A family-friendly movie that will encourage young ones to read, it stars Brendan Fraser in the lead role. The actor was literally a perfect fit for the role as he actually inspired the character of Mo! Funke sent him one of the first copies of her novel and thanked him for being her inspiration.

“The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader”

Based on the third novel in C.S. Lewis’ classic fantasy book series, this epic movie features strong performances and fantastic special effects. A perfect sea adventure story for curious young minds, the movie is a great adaptation of a much-loved title.

“Stardust”

Romantic fantasy film “Stardust” features a suitably star-studded cast that includes Michelle Pfeiffer, Claire Danes, Robert De Niro and Ricky Gervais. With a plot that revolves around a naïve lad’s search for a magical falling star that will help him win the heart of his true love, this is a sweet tale that can be enjoyed by all the family.

“Conan the Barbarian”

Starring the man who would become California’s governor (Arnie in an early role), this 1982 classic tells the story of a barbarian warrior who sets off to avenge the death of his parents, slain by an evil sorcerer when he was a boy. Also featuring silk-tongued orator James Earl Jones, this epic sword-and-sorcery film grossed more than $100 million at box-offices worldwide. Incredibly, stunt woman Corrie Jansen also set a women’s free-fall record of 55 metres while creating a scene for the film!

“The Lord of the Rings” Trilogy

Hmmm … does much more need to be said here? Peter Jackson took a legendary book that had been deemed “un-filmable” by most and transformed it into a masterful trilogy that will stand the test of time. Watch all three movies together as one epic movie and witness the spectacular.

Whether you’re a lover of the classic fantasy film or enjoy staying up-to-date with current works, these are a few ideas to keep you entertained while waiting for the return of “Game of Thrones”!

Agree wholeheartedly with all of the above. ‘Labyrinth’ with David Bowie and ‘Legend’ with Tom Cruise and Tim Curry are also faves along with the extraordinary ‘A Company Of Wolves’ with Angela Lansbury circa 1984 I think.

That’s a consensus! I like John Carter, and Snow White and the Huntsman. The other Snow White, released at the same time, was so bad I couldn’t get through the first 10 minutes.

Yep. That was it. I ordered it on Amazon Instant Video, and it cost me $3.99. Biggest waste of movie money in years!

Seen them all. Now can we add our own, ok here are a few of mine. The Princess Bride, Willow, Snow White and the Hunstman, John Carter was panned all over the place but I enjoyed it. What is not to like with Taylor Kitsch half naked.
