Mad Michigan Mom Wants ‘Pornographic’ Diary of Anne Frank Banned

Read Time:1 Minute, 57 Second

The Diary of a Young Girl (Also known as The Diary of Anne Frank, almost universally so in the US) is a book of the writings from the Dutch language diary kept by Anne Frank while she was in hiding for two years with her family during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands.

Anne-Frank-diary

The unfortunate family was apprehended in 1944 and Anne Frank ultimately died of typhus in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. The diary was retrieved by Miep Gies, who gave it to Anne’s father, Otto Frank, the only known survivor of the family. The diary has now been published in more than 60 different languages.

In the United States however, a Michigan mother has decided that the famous diary is “pornographic.”  Gail Horalek made the porn comparison because, in the full and unedited version of the book, Frank writes about her (gasp) genitalia, explains the Christian Post. That source alone is enough to make one suspicious that this is yet another assault on common sense by the God Believers.

Horalek filed a formal complaint with the school district, and says the school should remove the book, use the edited version, or at least have parents sign a permission slip before making kids read the unedited version. Fox 2 Detroit offers up the offending passage, which reads in part:

  • “What’s even funnier is that I thought urine came out of the clitoris … When you’re standing up, all you see from the front is hair. Between your legs there are two soft, cushiony things, also covered with hair, which press together when you’re standing, so you can’t see what’s inside. They separate when you sit down and they’re very red and quite fleshy on the inside.”

Horalek says she discovered the material when her daughter read it and told her mother it made her uncomfortable. “It doesn’t mean my child is sheltered, it doesn’t mean I live in a bubble, and it doesn’t mean I’m trying to ban books,” Horalek tells the Northville Patch.

Religion is damaging indeed and it’s likely the mother’s Christian sensibilities were upset by the ‘disgusting filth’ written by a young girl describing her body, months before she was to die in a Nazi concentration camp.

God. This again? Every few years, this same old saw makes headlines. I’ve written about it, you’ve written about it – at this point, pretty much everybody gets it. Yes, she’s a girl and yes, in the book she realizes that she’s got “one of these,” as opposed to “one of those.”

So what!

This must make her feel uncomfortable because she has yet to even tell her daughter about the vagina! Religious or not, sex and our body parts are a part of life and you need to talk to your children about it eventually. I’ve seen so many parents who do not want to even talk about sex with their children because they fear it will make them want to have sex, which is very untrue. It’s better to be educated and smart then stupid and regretful, in my opinion. It was uncomfortable for me to learn about those things in life at first but I needed to know about it. It’s just a part of life. Christian religion does not at all bash on sexual parts or sex if it is within the context of “marriage” (I mean, to be fruitful you kind of have sex, right?) so it isn’t like it is bad for her daughter to read about things dealing with the body. I was schooled Catholic and I still had sex ed. 😛 what will she do next? Ban all anatomy and science books if they mention any reference to sexual organs?

That woman needs to get a life and leave Anne Frank’s diary alone!

Look at this woman, afraid of sex and vaginas.

Yes, moron, it does mean you live in a bubble: Out here in the rest of the world, we do not have shame about our bodies, we do not have shame that we masturbate and fuck, and we do not have shame about the fact that other people do as well.

Get the fuck over yourself, you outdated nutter…

I am fascinated to read about Anne Frank’s sexual parts. It is very voyeuristic, as though I am watching her from inside a cupboard. This is how intimate her diary is. And it is these kinds of thoughts that are frightening to this mother and daughter. The problem is not actually the book: they are frightened of the urges it arouses in them. This is called “projection”. It is the reason a lot of terrorists kill Westerners. The way the women dress arouses uncontrollable conflicts between their religious teachings and their sexual desires. So better to destroy. It is a final commitment to a choice: the path of denial. This is the way to remove the guilt. Suicide removes guilt. This is called “sublimation”. Watch Psycho by Alfred Hitchcock. Norman Bates is wandering the streets of America. His eyes are behind every curtain, every doorway. He has a big knife. This mother and daughter live in fear. Some compassion would go a long way.

Well at least as ‘nutters’ go she’s making a good job of it.

I’m sure God loves her 😉

A good parent would take this opportunity to discuss the “offensive” passages in this book with her daughter, then explain any applicable religious beliefs to her right then and there. A good parent does not ask others to do her parenting for her…

So… …let me see if I got this straight… ….the murder and attempted annihilation of an entire ethnic group by systematic, controlled, inhumane and torturous means — not offensive or pornographic… …reference to genitals… …extremely offensive… Got it!

I’ll take a stab at this: yes, I think she’s more offended by the explicit description of genitalia than the description of hiding from the Holocaust, and here’s my hypothesis as to why. I think the descriptions of the fear and tension of hiding from the Nazis, along with the background information her daughter is probably studying on the Holocaust, seem to her to be the expected and normal purview of the book. Because they don’t surprise her, and because she feels secure that she knows how she thinks and feels about these things (Nazis evil, Holocaust awful, Jews in the attic good guys, Miep and the other guy good guys. . . ) she’s comfortable with it.
The description of genitalia makes her, like her daughter, “uncomfortable.” It was a surprise to her to find it in the book (I was surprised, too–I think I must have been given the edited version in middle school, which I guess shouldn’t surprise me) and she doesn’t really know what to make of her feelings about it.

That’s all wild guesswork, of course, and likely to be wrong. But typing out long stuff on the internet keeps me off the streets.

Keeryst, I don’t even have good dirty snark for this one. It has rendered me speechless with the stupidity of people today. I’m upping the ketamine dose through the iv in the corner if you need me.

You’ve got to be kidding me? This is a real story? Fucking wackos. Not banning books? That’s exactly what she’s asking the school district to do. Idiot.

It is always funny to me when people who clearly don’t read books object to the content of literature.

This woman complaining to the Christian Post might want to take a look at the bible. There are FAR more discussions of genitals in the bible than The Diary of Anne Frank, and they’re often actually of a sexual nature.

But again, clearly this woman has never read the bible (or likely any other books).

This woman is crazy, book is nothing to do with pornography, if anything it is history. Banning this book is wiping out a life again. Frank lives on souly by forgetting her

Bill Formby

This is so silly that it is embarrassing. To think that a mother cannot deal with this brief passage in such an important book is unfathomable. She is so embarrassed about her own body that she cannot explain the context with her daughter shows ignorance at its worst.

This woman apparently is so stupid that she imagines her own daughter has not made similar observations about her body.

Instead she is so brainwashed by the evils of her religion that she cannot express herself rationally. He ignorance has done nothing more than draw attention to what would be an almost unnoticed paragraph in the book.

Really? Anne Frank is a literary hero, and you try and get it banned from the school district. I suggest you get a clue by four and smack it upside your head.

I can say as a Christian that all women, even Christian ones, have vaginas. I’m concerned about the mom in this case who apparently doesn’t want her daughter to know women possess them.

I remember a family example. A cousin was concerned about her daughter because the girl was sixteen and hadn’t started having periods yet. My father said that was fine because he thought that if she wasn’t menstruating, she wouldn’t be interested in sex. The older my father got, the more religulous he became. I sometimes found it hard to believe that he held an MS degree – some of his ideas where chock full of woo.

As usual, the religious reich wants to impose their insanity upon everyone else. It isn’t enough that they warp the minds of their own children, they insist upon doing it to your children, too. They also want to do it to you. It must be true, misery does love company.

Then I’d like to know just what to call it you silly god-person, you. I fart in your general direction and wave my private parts at your auntie.
