Boy Who Survived Tornado Killed By Dog

Read Time:1 Minute, 1 Second

Another terrible tragedy to come out of the horror that was the Oklahoma tornado, and this time it involves the 5-year old son of the family whose home was destroyed in last month’s twister.  Apparently the boy, who was staying with family friends in Arkansas, was crying and upset while trying to put on his shoes when the resident dog, a bull mastiff, attacked him.

“The dog possibly took that as being aggressive and the child was attacked,” a police spokesman tells Arkansas Matters.

The dog’s owner says she tried to pull the dog off the boy, but he had suffered major injuries to his head and neck by the time she managed to separate them. The boy and his 2-year-old sister were staying with the family while his parents worked to rebuild their home. The dog, a bull mastiff, has been put down. “To me, it’s heartbreaking,” the police spokesman says. “I’ve got a 5-year-old daughter. You can’t imagine what this family and friends are going through right now.”

There’s no words really are there?

Not the kids fault, not the dogs fault.

Sometimes life really can be a bitch.

I was once told by a vet that one of the most dangerous characteristics for a dog is a protective instinct. At the time, I had a farm in a remote location near a city. We had 6 dogs ranging in size from a small beagle to a St. Bernard. The dogs had the run of the place. She, the vet, advised me to strongly discourage any protective behaviors. Of the 6, the Dalmatian female was, by far, the most protective…and the most likely to bite.

We value our pets’ ability to protect us, but, like a loaded gun, there can be a price to pay for that defensive instinct. How sad for all, including the dog, that a misunderstanding instigated by a distraught child led to the death of the child and the dog…and horror for both families.
