Even in Texas 00:03 is After Midnight
Wendy Davis stood and spoke against SB5, a new bill to make it even harder for women in Texas to abort a pregnancy, for over 11 hours. Trying to pass the bill last before the session’s enforced end at 0:00 the Republican majority finally started their vote in the literal last-minute. Unfortunately for them this process still took until after midnight.
Not to be stopped by little details like the chronological passing of time they promptly changed the time stamp of the vote to make it look like the bill had been passed on Tuesday. If that sounds a little fishy to you you’re not alone. Because they did this in front of hundreds of thousands watching via life stream.
“And we would have gotten away with it if it wasn’t for you meddling kids and your internet!” While the traditional media was busy airing reruns from earlier shows thousands upon thousands watched life as Republicans tried to prevent Wendy Davis from succeeding in her attempt to filibuster SB5. Hashtag #standwithWendy trended worldwide on Twitter while the senate itself was nearly drowned in shouts from the audience after the question ““At what point must a female senator raise her voice or her hand to recognized over her male colleagues in the room?” was asked by Senator Leticia Van De Putte. The audience did not give the senate order for over 20 minutes, attempting to hold out till midnight and keep the bill from passing. The crowd kept chanting “Let her speak, let her speak” referring to the fact that Davis had in fact been pulled from the floor earlier. Realizing that they would not get order they finally started to pass the bill at the literal last-minute anyway. However they did not manage to finish until 3 minutes after midnight as was clearly visible on the timestamps of the votes, some of them showing the 26th.
Until they change it that is. Compare the two screenshots above to see which stamps were changed to the 25th only a few minutes later. The screenshots of this fraud went viral on all social networks within seconds, even spawning a petition to the White House with several thousand signatures before half an hour had passed. The crowd in the senate refused to leave, calling Ms Davis’ name and demanding proper closure of the legislative session at midnight. State troopers had to remove the audience from their seats resulting in one arrest that was caught on video right away.
Meanwhile CNN was still talking about blueberry muffins.
While it may seem a bit petty to insist on those two minutes one has to consider that the only way a democracy can work is if those in power can only wield it within a certain set of rules. Considering Wendy Davis could not go to the bathroom, sit or even lean on anything during those eleven hours because her opponents insist on the same strict rules it also seems pretty fair. Apparently someone in Texas finally realized that both rules, and the internet that watched them break them, exist they caved and the SP5 was declared dead by the Lieutenant Governor at around 2:15 am local time. This was confirmed shortly thereafter by feeds from both parties.
In the end Wendy Davis and her pink sneakers stood for almost 13 hours but for now she prevented the latest attack in the GOP’s war on women and the people of Texas let the world hear loud and clear that not all of them are as red as public perception would make us believe.

Excellent article that showcases the courage of this young woman and I suggest you folks at MadMike’s continue to cover her career. I think she’ll go places.
She is already talking about running against him next yr for governor. Act Blue donation site up already if anyone is so inclined. I gave coz it’s past time the Ann Richards and Molly Ivins types of womenz came back to Texas politics.
This was good man, lots of graphics, and clean copy. Good job and good story. Go Wendy!
You won’t believe what Rick Perry said today…stay tuned!
Wait, you mean it gets even more crazy than a woman having to go through something as antiquated and outrageous as a painful phyiscal endurance test to stop a law that would remove her control of her own body? Seriously the only thing that could somehow get Perry points about this were if he showed up in nothing but his trunks shouting “THIS…IS….TEXAS!” and kick someone into a well.
There is not enough brain bleach in the world, to clean my beautiful mind of the image you just presented here of Governor Goodhair in trunks. I am sending you the bill for my mini vacation to somewhere fun 🙂
Devon posted about this yesterday but it’s still a message that needs to be told. Wendy Davis has shown courage and I hope legislators all over the country will be inspired to do the right thing.
This would be my fault for leaving the editors with way too much work. This has been written a few minutes after the news about SB5 being dead had hit.
LOL LOL! Yep. That’s it 🙂
