A Culture of Rape: Let it Happen-It Will All Be Over Soon

Read Time:2 Minute, 23 Second

While a lot of men would like to deny it, rape culture is still alive and well, and in the current climate you would think that at least people working in professional marketing would have the good sense to not use it to further that culture.

gaming

For those of you not into gaming E3 is the most important gaming event of the year and all the major producers are showing off their new shiny toys. Microsoft has already caused a lot of raised eyebrows with the massive privacy intrusions. Maybe they decided to cover up this mess by giving the whole world another reason to despise them, it certainly looked like it this Monday.

In the promo for the new Killer Instinct they brought one of the producers on stage and let him play against a female community manager who had never played the game. Now I could write a whole article just about  how much of a terrible idea it is to reinforce every cliche about sexism and violence in modern gaming by playing to the ego’s of miserable male teens by showing a women being beaten with no chance in a fighting game. One might even go so far as to say that maybe it’s not a good idea to include men beating up women in your promotion even if it is just a game, considering this is the marketing for a multimillion dollar industry that tries to get into family’s living rooms. Thankfully they went even further, sparing us from having to think about nuanced issues by going all out in their rape power fantasy in the banter between the producer and the community manager.

The producer starts with a taunt while beating up his opponent who just to remind you had never played the game before:  “Come on, you got to practice before you get on stage before millions of people,”

The community manager sounds understandably overwhelmed: “I can’t even block!” “You’re too fast!”

And it seems the producer decides this is all still too subtle at this point: “Just let it happen, it’ll be over soon!”

He continues to beat up her avatar with the comments  ““You have a fight stick!”  and“Wow, you like this!”

The answer of the community manager sounds much calmer than you’d think, almost like an adult talking like a child “No, I don’t like this!”

So while rape jokes may have some place in comedy this is clearly not it. This is the intentional humiliation of a female company employee to pander to male teens with issues and the only questions left to me is how can it be possibly that Microsoft has not released an apology and the news that everyone involved in this has been fired?

As a simple man I would like to say this.

Driving around ‘instructing’ my students how to drive a car without killing anyone including themselves I often see attractive young ladies walking down the streets.

Sometimes I realise they aren’t even of legal age. This is slightly worrying as I wonder whether they are losing their childhood too quickly but there you go eh?

My mind says “Wow! She’s gorgeous!” – well it does if my student is advanced enough for me to ‘switch off’ a bit and admire the passing views.

My daughter is 23 years of age – my students and many of the attractive young ladies I look at admiringly are of a similar age.

The thought of ‘doing’ anything other than admiring from afar appalls me. They could be my daughter!

There is absolutely nothing wrong with women dressing ‘sexily’ if they so chose. There is everything wrong with a man believing that a woman so dressed is ‘asking for it’.

If, as a man, you are incapable of admiring a ‘sexy’ young woman walking down the street without having the urge to rape her then the ‘problem’ is in your head not in hers.

I suspect the wifey would ‘chop it off’ if I behaved in this way and, frankly, she would have every right to as well.

I say it’s our fault, the wimminz because… duh… we walk around with vaginas and stuff so it’s tempting to the men to see us in the open doing things. Damn, I just channeled a right wing nutjob didn’t I. I’ll get to fixing that, when I catch up with what Ian Somerhalder is doing today.

I have to wonder if that’s a Microsoft policy one one arrogant jerk of a man that needs to spend some time in a prison cell with “Bubba.”

Agreed James. This story was shocking and I’m surprised it didn’t make nightly news.

E3 is days of continious advertising and press conferences about something that can be considered toys, it is likely that it simply got lost in the white noise of other “nonsense” I’d imagine classic media considers most of these anouncements.

Nah, he doesn’t really James. He needs a lesson in how not to be a fuckin idiot is what he needs. Rape is never a good thing, no matter who it is happening to and someone in prison especially, since they have nowhere to go to get away from it.

I was thinking more of a period (no pun intended) for attitude adjustment. Can’t get away from it? How easy s it for women to get away from the “rape culture?”

Oh, got it. Didn’t know if you were doing the “it’s ok to rape if they are in prison thing” We ALL know how I feel about that one :). I don’t think we can, any of us, get away from it in a society that looks at females as the tempation spoken of, in their magical fairy tale guide to the afterlife. Look no further than senate hearings on military sexual assault, these past few weeks. All old white men in chairs, telling more old white men in chairs we need to fix this but ok, we’ll go ahead and relax some of these rules because, well… wimmynz what are you going to do with them huh.

Unless and until women become more than chattel for some men, we will be as bad as the Taliban and those places that keep women in the background covered up, because some men don’t know how to handle seeing the women, like it is our fault they can’t control themselves, so they try to control us. That brings up a whole other thing as far as, what does that say about the many many men that don’t go around raping and are not tempted by every female they see.

It’s our fault anyway, for not choosing the correct anatomy and being born female. If we had wanted to, we could have been born male or something something to better parents argley bargley. Yes, I have actually heard that argument on a winger site, before anyone asks. I didn’t make it up, stole it from someone who is a complete fuckin idiot.

When did I, or anyone here say prison rape was OK? I was talking about an attitude adjustment for someone that needs it very badly.

For that matter, women often to dress to be provocative. Then complain when it works and whine when it doesn’t.

Provocatively dressed still should not mean “I’m available and eager.” It should mean “I won’t be offended if you complement me.”

That is why I put that rape bit in quote marks. I have seen where prison rape is talked or joked about, as a punishment for someone that does bad things and I just used you since I was replying to you. I didn’t say you were doing this at all, I said, oh got it, I thought… when you clarified for me you were talking attitude adjustment and not what I thought you were talking about.

Maybe some women do dress that way for compliments and whatnot, not all the time though and yes, you are right does not mean hey let’s get it on.
