According to reports, referee Otavio Jordao da Silva (20) fatally stabbed footballer Josenir dos Santos Abreu (30) during a heated moment of a match.

Santos Abreu is believed to have argued and then struck the referee after being unhappy with a decision.

It is believed the referee was carrying a knife throughout the match and fatally stabbed the player in retaliation.

Santos Abreu was rushed to hospital but died from injuries on the way.

Outraged by the incident, some spectators then apparently decided to inflict a gruesome revenge on the referee.

According to reports, the referee was tied up, beaten, stoned and quartered. They then put his head on a stake and planted it in the middle of the pitch.

One man, Luiz Moraes de Souza, 27, has been arrested over the incident. He has admitted to assaulting the referee but denied killing the man. Police are searching for two more suspects.

They are currently viewing video footage of the incident filmed by a witness with a mobile phone.

In a statement, the regional delegate of Santa Ines, Valter Costa, who is looking after the case, said: “One crime never justifies another crime. Actions likes this do not collaborate with the legality of state law.”

And they call us Alabama fans rabid. Even we don’t go that far.

Humans always find a a way to remind us just how primitive we are. Can you imagine the anger it took to quarter a man THEN behead him? How much anger can there be over a ball game? And the writer is correct, one of my good friends always says one crime never justifies another crime.

For many years, have felt that the obsession with sports, especially professional sports, is a form of mental illness.

We HAVE to support OUR team.” How dumb is that? It’s not your team, it usually belongs to some wealthy white man. That man will remove, trade players, or even the entire team; whatever he sees as the most profitable. Does anyone recall when the Dodgers and the Giants played in New York? Or the Arizona Cardinals in St. Louis?

A player you idolize today could be playing for your most hated opposition next year or even next week. The entire team might be playing across the country next year. Why is your loyalty to them when they have none at all for you? Fans are nothing more than a revenue stream. Buy tickets, buy merchandise, buy the hype.

Come to think of it, sports is sounding more like religion, isn’t it? Maranhao, Brazil just made a human sacrifice to their god.

Well the Cardinal’s are owned by right wing fanatics, so there is that part to it, why anyone would admit to liking them is beyond me 🙂 Note to self, when asked to ref a softball game or any game really, in Brazil, just say no thanks I gave it up for Lent and it stuck.

Having lived in Phoenix, I can tell you more about the politics there and the major sports team owner, Jerry Colangelo, than either of us would like.

Here in Brazil, they are not fanatic about anything but futebol. If it had been anything else, there may not have even been any spectators.

I have never seen a softball or baseball game here. Basketball and volleyball, I have seen only on TV. They have a version of volleyball, played like futebol where they are not permitted to use their hands. I see that sometimes being played on the beach or in parks. It’s the teams they go crazy for. If their favorite team almost makes a good play, they will set off fireworks for five minutes. I am dreading the World cup here. There will be no sleeping or quiet until a week after it is over.

For years I have said that, if Brazil put as much effort and attention into their roads as they do to futebol, the Germans would be coming here for lessons in road building.

As far as violence over sporting matches, countries like the UK and the USA have their share, too. At least they mostly have good roads, though.

And these are supposed to be civilized countries? Hardly.
