Religious Right: Atheist Chaplains May Convince Wounded Soldiers to Kill Themselves

Read Time:1 Minute, 0 Second

There are few words you can say to a Christian that cause as much anger as “atheist.”  And when you put “atheist” in a sentence, right before “chaplain,” some of them really go nuts.

When former Navy Chaplain Gordon Klingenschmitt, a guest on the “Talk To Solomon” program, welcomed efforts to appoint atheist chaplains host Stan Solomon said that atheism is “basically sticking your head up your butt and wondering why it’s dark” and said that being an atheist chaplain is like being “a sensitive cannibal who says grace before he chews your leg off.”

After Klingenschmitt claimed there was no need for atheist chaplains in the military and the whole thing is really just a way to undermine the Christian chaplains and reduce our numbers,” Solomon asserted that it was all a part of the effort to implement President Obama’s health care policy by encouraging wounded soldiers to kill themselves.

“An atheist chaplain,” Solomon declared, “would be the perfect vehicle for convincing wounded warriors that they should end their lives because there’s nothing in the future and there’s nothing now, so why not just save money and kill themselves”:

Perhaps we could call them counselors then. When you are wounded and hurting you may not want a religious Chaplin but that doesn’t mean that you don’t want someone to comfort you and be there for you during the inevitable dark times to help keep your spirits up. If you stop and think about it an atheist would not want a religious praying for him or her, but someone to talk to about their fears of being crippled, of facing life without a limb or being disfigured is not inappropriate. Actually back when I was in the Marines the Chaplin were good at being non denominational and not pushing religion if you didn’t want it. I can’t say as much for the Marine Corps since on Sundays if you didn’t go to church you went to the Drill Field and practiced marching for and extra hour and a half.

Well put, Bill. It was much the same when I was in the Army. Of course, they were not pushing religion on you, were they? But not allowing you to have any time to think for yourself is a normal attitude in the military.

Think? Not a chance. We were told to react. Actually during boot camp it was nice to go to the one place, even for an hour, where you were not being cussed out and shoved around. The non denominational ministers were so careful not to step on anyone else’s religious toes that it was a fairly pleasant hour.

As a very junior officer, I was told I “Should set an example for the men.” So I didn’t go to any church services until I received a very stern lecture from a superior with a Chaplin in attendance that I WOULD be in church next Sunday and every Sunday thereafter. Any excuses would have to be signed by the base mortician’s office.

Atheists can’t have chaplains because they don’t believe. It’s like calling a man without a horse a cowboy.

Xians can’t have opinions because they don’t have intelligence, facts, or rational reasoning.

It’s like calling a man a creative genius when he has never had an original thought in his life.

As always, just when you think you have heard the ultimate in stupidity and arrant assholery, one of those truly insane jerks demonstrates that, “No you have not!”

An atheist chaplain???

If that isn’t a contradiction in terms then I don’t know what is!

“our Father who doesn’t hark in a non-existent heaven” etc etc – even I might attend church to hear that one 😉
